Forum: Bug Report and Feature Requests

Quick search feature for first time users that appear when signed out.

Jenni ๐Ÿšซ

When you go on the site before logging in it gives you an option for quick search. I am suggesting you make that feature part of our member search option.

Quick Search is available on the home page when logged in. I have used it quite a few times.

Jenni is talking about the story explorer:

Lazeez,

Please, where is this explorer link hidden? Is it behind another front page link? How do I get to it?

I've been a premier member for 20 years and this is the first time I've seen this.

Thanks

It's only visible if you're not logged in.

I'm logged in and it's link is there at the top of the home page.

Strange. If I search the homepage for "Story Explorer" the result is Phrase not found.

Edit: And if I open the homepage in Private/Incognito or log off, in big bold letters under the navigation header the text: First time here? Try our Story Explorer

Same for me using Private Mode.

But for me logged on it's "Find something new? Try our Story Explorer"

@Grant

Story Explorer only show about 28% of all stories, and only 10 stories per page, and only as a randomized list.
It might have something to do with free vs. premier membership. With premier membership you can use Category/Advanced Search to its full potential, and probably don't need Story Explorer.

Dear Lazees, the new explorer is a nice feature. Can we please enrich the header a little? I'd like a Home-Button or perhaps the same header as in
https://storiesonline.net/library/authors.php?
Thank you for your constant work

@amatlinux

When you're logged in, the Home link shows up. I don't know yet about adding the full navigation header.

The page's original purpose is to simplify things to new people, some users asked for its availability when logged in too. I did that.

It's not designed to be a regular search page.

Not for me.
The only link on the Explore page is the "Other Stories" link at the bottom.
I have to use the Back arrow of the browser, or click on a story or author and then use the Menu to get out of it.

@Jenni

OK...

I logged out and reloaded the SOL home page and there it was, "First time here? Try our Story Explorer"

Log back in and it's not there.

Thanks all.

The Explorer is designed to simplify finding stories on the site, especially for new users. It pulls from less than a third of the stories on the site.

It is not needed for premier members as there are more elaborate facilities to find stories, and it's not as powerful as the Randomizer, which is accessed by clicking 'More' on the random story on the home page.

What many people seem to have forgotten is that accessing Stories on Line is different than accessing most websites.

When logged into most websites and you close the webpage you are logged out of the website and have to log back into the website to view its content.

For Stories on Line when you close your browser you are logged out of the website. However, when you go back to the website, you are recognized and automatically logged back into the website.

Quick Seardh is intended to provide a potential member with a means of learning what types of stories will be available to them if they become a site member.

Once you are a member, there are two methods provided for searching the website's stories that provide more flexible capabilities.

I don't believe adding Quick Search would improve Stories on Line. it would just be more work for Lazeez. People will just ask for improvements to the simple search routine.
