Look at some of the stories at the Damsels in Distressed universe, the modification date shown in the 'more info' page is (much) later that that of the last chapter being posted, and also much later than the latest date on which any chapter was updated. So what kind of change could have triggered a changing the modification date, please?
From what I remember from the discussion when the 'Modified' date was introduced, something like a spelling correction or even as trivial as a layout change will update the 'Modified' date, but not count as a chapter 'Update'. IIRC, the request was made for some method to know if e.g. spelling corrections had been made to a story, to know if a redownload of the story was needed to keep the requester's local copy up-to-date; Lazeez responded by exposing an internal data item already available in the database.
An author is posting a story, but hasn't posted a chapter for some time. A reader alerts the author to an error in a chapter. The author fixes the error and saves the fix. The update date will be added/changed to the time the author saves the file. The update date will be after the date of the last posted chapter.

That's what I suspected - or even a cover being defined. But for the DiD stories, I think the modification time predates the ability to define a cover.
