Tag definitions

solitude ๐Ÿšซ

(a) Some pages now have a 'tag definitions' link at the top. It would be nice if this were more widespread - basically if it were available on any page showing tags, where a reader might want to look up the meaning of a tag before deciding whether to read a story showing that tag.

(b) the sort order on the tag definitions page is weird, making it difficult to look up a tag. Alphabetical, please? (Or a way of asking it to be sorted?) And a jump link at the top to the genres section? Thanks!

(c) a more complicated one: if you add a way to jump to the tags definitions page from a 'more info' page for a story, it would be nice if just those tags (and genres) relevant to that story were shown!

(Edited to correct mior typo.)

b) If you look at the category search, the tags are organized in to groups. The tags on the definitions page are in basically the same as the category search.

Rather than complete alphabetical order, it might be better if the definitions page showed the groupings.

That means you need to know the tag's group in order to easily find the tag. If you don't know the group, then you have to scan the entire list until you locate the code.

An alphabetical sort would be the best way to find a specific code.

Better still would be embedded links (the story tags pointing to the appropriate tag definitions); no searching at all.

no searching at all.

As an author, when I complete a story I search through the story tags from top to bottom looking for ones that apply to the story.

Btw, that's also why I would want them grouped rather than simply listed alphabetically.

As an author, ...

I assume that those submitting a story are given a list of code with checkboxes beside them, so they can choose which apply. And I'll further guess that the order here is related to the order they appear in the tag lists shown alongside story descriptions - and its sensible for these to be grouped as they are.

For readers, though, when we want to find the meaning of a particular tag, a page where they are - or can be asked to be - in alphabetical order would be helpful.

Yes, like with the Category Search. And like the CS, there are no definitions.

So I go through the complete list with definitions, write down those that apply, and then reference that when I check them off when submitting the story. That is also why the order should match the way they're grouped โ€” the order of my list matches the order of the tags to check.

But if alphabetizing them is better for readers, that makes sense. But based on comments I get from readers, I doubt many read the definitions.

I agree. I would also extend that to some authors.

In general, the codes are self-explanatory, although the details may not be apparent from the code's name.

Many authors write similar types of stories, so they are familiar with the codes appropriate to their stories and don't check the code's definition before adding the code to their story. If they decide to check the definition of a specific code, the code would be easier to locate in an alphabetical listing of codes.

SB, I doubt that many authors select their story's codes in the manner that you described (i.e. from the list of code definitions), so an alphabetical listing of the codes would be best for readers and most authors.

No argument from me. In fact, when the list first changed (taking out the groups), I wondered why it wasn't alphabetized.

I got into the habit of checking the tag list when completing a story because new tags seem to be added all the time.

I search through the story tags from top to bottom looking for ones that apply to the story.

I select codes using the table Lazeez provides as part of the story submission process. As you know, it is structured by grouping related codes, thus I don't need the code definition page. If I don't know a code, I note it and can check its definition later. If appropriate, I can add it by editing my story codes.

Alphabetically sorting the definitions makes finding the code's definition easier.

Most of the browsers have a 'find on page'. In Firefox it is ctr+f. I don't know what it is in other browsers. Have you tried that?

Maybe the site could list story Tags with an abbr-Tag, allowing us to see the actual Tag-definition with a mouse-over.

...at least in the regular page design. I don't think the abbr-Tags work on touchscreen devices.

@Sarkasmus

When I started the site, it used to display just the abbreviations, and the tag definitions page was absolutely needed.

However, I added the full display tags and moved away from the abbreviations, so it's less needed. Since then, every new tag added, the abbreviations have become incomprehensible. Something like l1 and t2. There is no benefit to displaying the underlying codes.

By the way, I updated the tags display page yesterday and the tags are shown in their groups and it allows one to display the tags in alphabetical order.

It looks like you dropped Girl, Boy, Lolita, and Pedophilia from the definitions list.

Since there are still stories in the system with those tags, you might want to include them, but mark them as deprecated somehow.

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Sorry, I realize that my suggestion was stupid. I didn't know you could just add a title to elements and it displays on a hover event regardless, like you do in the category-search page.

My idea was more for the tags displayed underneath stories, where you still use abbreviations (like Ma/Fa for example).

Yesterday, I used the search function for something I had been recommended and came across a story with the "caution"-tag, but couldn't remember what that meant. And that became especially annoying since the Tag Definition page is only accessible from the home page. So, I thought if you just added a mouse-over tooltip to tags wherever they're displayed, it would help.

@Sarkasmus

Almost every page with story listings showing tags have the link to the tag definitions page in the top right. You should double check.

Not to nit-pick but hw about the home page? An author's home page? Activity stream?

hw about the home page?

"Tag Definitions" is a link on the left of the home page beneath "Post Your Stories."
