Category exclusion preferences wiped?

tendertouch ๐Ÿšซ

Strangest thing. I noticed a story that came up in my updated story feed that should have been excluded. When I went to the preferences they'd be cleared โ€“ except for the story type preference which still showed the one entry it should have.

Not a huge deal to reset them, but still a little strange.

What I find even stranger is, I have nothing selected on the page. Yet, the screen says my selection has resulted in 4221 stories being excluded.

Old stories with the codes boy, girl, or pedo are blocked by default for everyone. There's a different spot in your profile where you can turn that off if you want.

By old stories, are you referring to the grandfathered stories? If so, I wasn't aware that any of those stories were blocked because of their codes.

I just checked. Those codes are still valid, and a search on each code returned grandfathered stories.

I don't recall ever enabling those codes. But if I did, then the excluded story count should be 0. If I didn't, would my search return stories with the code, which is what happened.

Am I missing something?

Here is my understanding how this works;

Stories Excluded by your Selection = (stories excluded by category exclusion) + (stories from excluded authors) = Number of stories excluded.

@Zellus

You are confused.

The Author Exclusion category excludes all stories written by the authors you list on the Author Exclusion page from certain lists displayed by SOL. This exclusion category has nothing to do with the codes listed in an excluded author's stories.

The Category Exclusion category excludes all stories from certain lists displayed by SOL that contain the codes you select on the Category Exclusion page for exclusion. So when the Preferences for Categories Exclusion Site-wide page displays 'Stories Excluded by your Selection: 4221', the stories being excluded are excluded because of codes selected on the page. The stories excluded have nothing to do with the author that wrote the stories.

Now to explain what I meant by 'certain lists', SOL displays two types of lists. There are the lists that SOL creates without being requested to do so by a member, such as the New Stories list. There are also lists that SOL creates when requested to do by a member, such as the lists created using the Category Search function.

In generating a list such as New Stories, SOL checks the member's author and category exclusions and excludes stories written by an excluded author and stories that contain an excluded code. Evidently, the exclusion does not affect stories added to the list before the exclusion was defined.

In lists generated by functions like the Category Search function, SOL includes all stories that meet the requested search criteria, to include stories written by an excluded author and stories containing an excluded code. For example: if you excluded the Ma/Ma code and your search criteria included the Ma/Ma code, then the resulting list will contain stories that include the Ma/Ma code.

... The stories excluded have nothing to do with the author that wrote the stories.

I don't agree with this, and this test can help you understand;

Exclude an author, and Stories Excluded by your Selection, will increase to the number of stories that author has written.*

*There might be a bug in the calculation, because sometimes, the number did not increased to the correct amount.
- Example; aubie56 224(-2) - Kelly85 321(+3) - Ka Hmnd 268(+0).

https://storiesonline.net/sol-secure/user/my_account.php?cmd=chooseAccessLevel

When Lazeez implemented this he set the default to filtered.

With the access level set to filtered, stories with characters under 13 years old will be filtered out of story listings.

Thanks. That is why I've seen under 13 characters in some of the grandfathered stories.

4221 stories being excluded

That's because you've probably have used the Author Exclusion Preferences to exclude authors.

@Zellus

That needs explanation.

According to the category exclusion page, it is the categories I have selected that is causing those 4221 stories to be selected. I no categories selected, so there should be no stories excluded. But Dominions Son's explanation may be the reason for that.

The Author Exclusion Preferences excludes authors, not the categories of their stories.

That's apparently how SOL works.
Before I posted the last message, I tested my hypothesis, and when I excluded a author the number went up.

Edit: The Access Level Filter that @Dominions Son wrote about did not change the number, I turned it on an off, but the number remains the same.

@tendertouch

I have just checked mine and they are as I'd expect, and they are not the standard setting mentioned by Dominions Son.
