Western with california ranch

Iirc a young guy goes west and ends up in california. finds or arrives at a ranch owned by a mexican man and his daughter. ends up marrying daughter and some banditos come to crash the wedding. I think the father charges them with a sword? Also not sure if it is part of this story or another one but I believe there are "locals" that move back to the ranch?

I can't find the story I'm thinking of, and I can't remember it's name, but what you mention happens in the last 3 rd of the story. In the start the MC goes west and sets up near the Rocky Mountains and later he's joined by his family from the east and then they move to California. Part of their success is the whisky and brandy his father makes.

I'm sure you're right - apart from the name swap - and I wonder how Happyhugo is getting on. He is up there in the "really vulnerable" age group.

This is it! Brady and Berta Boyd. It wasn't the MC that finds the mexican ranch but another character in the story. Found the info starting around ch 6/7

Thanks EB and Meangene I'll have to re-read both those stories but from a quick glance through I don't think either is the one I'm thinking of.

I seem to remember the mc takes a train trip back to his family? to get money to buy the ranch as the mexican girls father uses it in a poker game?

I'm hoping I'm not mixing up several stories,,,
