I don't recall reading this story, but I am curious. Did the GPS work back in time? If so, how did he take the satellites with him?

Details, details. Maybe in this universe a GPS doesn't need satellites.

Did the GPS work back in time?

He sold it as a watch.

racjuly ๐Ÿšซ

@CB

No, the gps didn't work. But the clock functioned. He told the person who bought that he had gotten in Montreal.

The clock shouldn't function either, at least not for any significant time. Most dedicated GPS devices have no way to manually reset the clock, it's done automatically from the time data from the signal from the GPS satellites.

And there would be no way to recharge/replace the device's batteries.

Most devices have quartz clocks, which will drift without satellite signals, but their accuracy would be far above any mechanical clocks at the time. Possibly seconds of drift per year. And the MC wasn't planning to stick around to provide long-term maintenance -- the batteries would probably last a year or more (the display was described as being activated only by a button push -- so very little continuous draw).

There is another story, (maybe already mentioned) about a family. I thought father, son and daughter. They are hiking and get sent back. They meet up with other people who got sent back as well. Start in the northeast, end up in ? The Dakotas, maybe.

That's in Washed Up as well.

@akarge

You're probably thinking of Matt Helm's "Somewhere in time--a trip to Waco. It was 2 stories condensed into 1. The part you're thinking of is part 2, the Malone family.

@FantasyLover

You beat me to it. It is actually 3 stories in one, Phillips, Malone, & Morgan families. They are all part of MattHHelm's Somewhere in Time Universe.
