Condoms used for something other than sex

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

Am looking for a story I remember reading years ago in which construction/repair workmen used condoms for something other than their original intent. One use, I recall, had to do with using a condom to repair a leaky faucet, though I no longer remember exactly how it did that.
i also remember (probably a different story) kids using condoms filled partially with water and dropping them from the second floor onto other kids who rang the doorbell - maybe a Halloween prank, but maybe not.
Even if it's not a story I've already read, I'd appreciate pointers to any story that has condoms used for something other than sex. I've tried using the search term "condom" but that gave me so many matches (exactly 1000) that Id never have time to go through them all one by one.

unfortunately, never heard of the story you are looking for. But most likely way of using a condom to repair a leaky faucet is to use it as a replacement gasket.

Dead tree: John Ringo's Ghost

You use tampons and pads for bandages. Before Lycra and Spandex, SEALs use would use king-sized black pantyhose in place of wetsuits in extremely warm water. And there's an underwater demo firing device that's supposed to be waterproof, but usually isn't. The trigger of the device is a ring on the end. The way you waterproof it is to get a condom, an extra large, unlubricated condom with a receptacle tip, that's for the trigger, and put the firing device in that. With me?

You beat me to it> I knew I remembered seeing a condom used for some such thing, but didn't remember the exact details.

Another alternative use for condoms is described in Richard Hooker's MASH (the book). The anaesthesiologist uses them to replace the little balloons which seal intratracheal catheters in place. Whilr the surgeons are in the know, the enlisted men wonder why he buys two dozen condoms per week at the P/X.

balloons

I think I've heard of them used for water bombs in the US.

There was an episode of a US crime drama (Castle?) in which a cop found a joke condom tree on his desk.

And didn't Abby, in NCIS, create a rose made out of condoms?

I vaguely recall something about condoms used for "water balloons" that actually contained noxious liquids (such as urine) rather than water.

If that's the condom tree, I believe you're right.

When I was about 10 years old I found a box of condoms in my dad's bedside table. Sheik brand IIRC. I took 6 and my buddy and I took them downtown, filled them with water and threw them off the 6th floor of a Parkade. Unfortunately we only filled 5. My mother found the unused 1 in my jeans pocket when she was doing the wash. Awkward conversation ensued. I had no idea what they were really for. She was horrified I might be using them as intended.

I would think the parents would be more concerned about them *not* being used as intended when called for ...

This was a somewhat common plot point in teen comedies of the '80s. I doubt it was actually done that often, though, given that condoms would have been rather expensive for the average kid.

Sure, buying them would be expensive, but swiping some from their father or an older male sibling would be free.

Long ago on a TV channel like Discovery or similar was a series about British SAS special forces. There was a whole episode about condoms and what else can be done with those, and why they always should be in inventory of any survivalist. The one I remember not yet mentioned there, was a combination of a condom and a sock for a usable, and even reusable, drinking water bladder.

I'd guess that unlubricated condoms are preferred.

I've never read the story you're looking for, but in medicine, there's something referred to as a 'Texas,' or 'condom,' catheter. Saves the patient from having one inserted into their bladder (no fun) and they can pee without getting up from were ever they are. It goes in a bag, which has to occasionally be emptied.

While in the Army, I heard of guys placing a condom over the muzzle of their m-16 if they had to go into the water. That was from some Viet Nam veterans

I heard something similar about keeping sand out of the barrel, probably in Iraq or Kuwait.

There's allegedly an exact match to that expression somewhere in Arlene and Jeff.

I remember a story from the directorial debut of Robert Rodriguez and his "El Mariachi." Critics were wondering how he got the squibs to work so much better than regular Hollywood movies. The critics were talking about the squibs he used, which were actually condoms filled with fake blood and then set up to explode for effect. Rodriguez used this method because they were much less expensive than the usual Hollywood squibs.

The "blood" shot out more effectively and basically looked much more extravagant than the usual Hollywood bloodshot squibs.

It's just another reason why necessity is the mother of invention.

It's a good movie and the blood spurts are impressive.

W.E.B. Griffin, in his second book in the Corps series (covering early 1942), had the resident manager of the San Carlos Hotel in Pensacola offer a discount to a marine who was also a fellow hotelier. The discount was for the penthouse, and was given because otherwise, certain young officers would rent the suite out on weekends and then, in the throes of questionable alcoholic mental dexterity, toss "large, balloon-like objects," filled with water or some other liquid, down from on high and onto unsuspecting would-be patrons of the hotel's dining room.

Now, if a 10-year old male were to use such objects for their intended purpose, well... in one sense, more power to him.
