Detoxing by Gordon Johnson

numq ๐Ÿšซ

Hi, I'm trying to understand something in a story I don't get.

In Detoxing by Gordon Johnson the MC has kidnapped three women under the instruction of their father in order to train them and make them into proper ladies. My confusion stems from a discussion that happens in chp 3. He tells them that he'll punish them if they disobey and that it might be of a sexual nature. He goes on to say it's not rape because he tells them in advance that he will do so if they misbehave. The analogy used is just like breaking the law, you must face your punishment and go to prison as a result of your decision to commit a crime.

What I don't get is how that isn't rape? It might be a punishment but isn't it still non-consensual?

I also don't really get why he has to have sex with them in the first place. He makes a big point about how their promiscuity is bad and that they need to change. But then tells their father during the initial setup that he will need to sleep with them in case they want it. Isn't that counterintuitive? In stuff like fat camps don't they stop you from eating junk food? Similarly here wouldn't abstinence be the key? Anyway, those were the points I wanted clarification on. It seems fairly popular so hopefully someone can explain to me. Thanks in advance

Rape in legal terms, or rape as defined in the SOL codes faq?

As a legal matter in the real world (the story world could have different laws) yes it would still be rape.

The SOL rape tag takes a narrower definition, limiting it to violent rape involving the use of physical force.

Now, I'm not familiar with the story in question, it could still be rape by the SOL definition, but it might not be.

Is force used or is he able to push them into accepting the punishments by other means of coercion?

Thanks for the explanation. A lot of times my understanding of something differs from what the tags are. I don't think he uses physical force so I guess that's why it doesn't have the tag. Thanks again.

As far as I recall, having both read and enjoyed the story, the protagonist warns the father because he realizes what he's doing IS rape, yet he feels it's the only way of reaching the three girls, forcing them to accept their decisions, while also recognizing that they're so used to [bad] sex, that they'd probably demand it, no matter the punishments he chooses to implement.

It's probably the weakest argument in the entire book, but once you get past it, the rest of the story fits together fairly well.

This could come down to a matter of definitions.

If you read the Second Best universe, it ends up defining "Slut" and "whore" in very different ways.

IIRC:

A slut is simply a girl/woman who enjoys sex. But is not necessarily indiscriminate about who she has sex with. Per the Second Best story guys don't have a problem with sluts.

For whore on the other hand, there are two kinds of whores.

1. Sluts who are indiscriminate about who they have sex with.

2. Girls/women who don't necessarily enjoy sex, but use it transactionally to get things they want (not necessarily money). Most of these types of whores are cheats. They will promise sex in exchange for what they want, but will attempt to avoid/minimize actually holding up their end of the bargain.

Back to your question.

1. Don't assume the "trainer's" goal is the same as the father's

2. The goal may not be making them chaste, but to get them to be particular about their partners without breaking them of enjoying sex. Based on the description I would expect that this is the explanation.

Authors frequently define things the way they want them to be. I think Gordons story is good, but Gordon has his MC saying things that are not true. We as readers tend to accept what the author presents even though we know it doesn't match reality.

For example: Gordon presents the ladies' abduction as if the father giving the MC permission to restrain the ladies' movements make their actions legal. The reality is three ladies are all adults and the father has no say in regard to the ladies' comings and goings. Thus, the MC and father's actions are actually them kidnapping the ladies. The MC threatened to have sexual intercourse with the ladies without their permission. If he had done so, it would have been rape.

There are many instances in the story that conflict with reality, but we as readers tend to overlook these instances. For example: the ladies were confined in an apartment. All they had to do is knock a hole through the drywall into the hallway and then leave. If the MC had tried to stop them, there were kitchen knives and other items in the apartment they could have used to disable or kill the MC.

The thing that annoys me about the story is, it is set in the US and the MC is from England. I can understand the MC using British words, terms, and phrases, but the rest of the characters in the story are Americans and they all speak using British words, terms, and phrases.

There are exceptions to this even in the real world. See Britney Spears for example.

ETA:
Florida is starting to clean it up, but they have had a problem with there conservatorship program where professional conservators were able to get older adults placed in a conservatorship without the victim or the victim's family even being aware that a conservatorship application was filed.

The first the victim would know of it was when the cops showed up to haul them off to a nursing home.

The conservator would then dispose of all of the victim's assets.
