Presidents on SOL

PotomacBob 🚫

In some stories on SOL, one of the characters becomes president of the United States. I've read a few and, as far as I can remember, liked them all. I, by no means, have a comprehensive list. What stories did I miss? And, which fictional presidents on SOL was your favorite - for whatever reason or reasons?

The best one I've read is rlfj's story A Fresh Start, although I'm betting you've gotten to that one.

The MC in Retreads becomes US president as well. Not much is said of that time period though.

President Archer - 'He's taking aim at terrorism'. Lazlo Zalezac's Hunter, also on FineStories and SciFiStories

@PotomacBob

In the Twice Lucky series the MC becomes el presidente as well - https://storiesonline.net/series/1301/twice-lucky

In B.J. Jones the Story of My Life. Book 2 by jballs the MC runs for President, but the novel ends just before the final results are announced.

Lady in Red: Book 3 (The Rise of the Empire) by Harddaysknight has one of the two main characters become the Pres.

Bodyguards II: Stolen Secrets by Shakes Peer2B.

Not so much my favorite - I'll go with A Fresh Start on that - but in the very convoluted world of Number 7's 'Second Chance' the MC becomes President at least twice, if I remember correctly.

I forget the name and don't have the time to look it up right now, but there is a story where a woman is named the Secretary of Education after a resignation. She is the 'member offsite' for a presidential address where the president, vice-president, and all other members of the cabinet are killed. On top of everything else, she faces a debt crisis when a revolt in Mexico causes a debt crisis she has to guide everyone through.

Could be one of Mackey Chandler's books.

The female Secretary of Education triggered my memory but none of the other details match.
In John Ringo's zombie apocalypse series Black Tide Rising there is female Secretary of Education who finally is found alive and as Acting President gives stupid orders to the people who were trying to overcome the chaos and reestablish civilization. The MC, Faith – a barely 14yo teenager – together with her 2 years older sister and two certified nutcase marines do an unauthorized search of a bunker and find there the (female) VP alive who takes over as POTUS.

Nope. Only Faith and Sgt Decker went, whilst Sophia and her aircrew provided top cover.

So assuming you are Ghost, is Joy going to be Bambi or Cottontail? Enquiring minds want to know.
Staying with Ringo, his take on the Anabasis of Xenophon seems pertinent again. Worldwide disease outbreak, withdrawal in disorder from the Middle East, Americans left behind, etc. I used to think it was his worst work, a way out there political polemic. Now, not so much. If I ever get to meet Ringo I'm asking for the winning lottery numbers.

StarFleet Carl 🚫

@Radagast

Definitely not Gretchen. I'm not sure I'd like to be anyone named Mike in his books, but I'm a romantic at heart, and don't like to see the women get killed off like happens in his books. I was already a Bun-Bun fan before reading him, but I wasn't a Crüxshadows fan previously.

@StarFleet Carl

Ringo's an equal opportunity Chooser of the Slain.

Learning of the Cruxshadows was a welcome side benefit of reading his books. Goths made me think of Punk with clinical depression, "I see a mohawk and I want it dyed black, no rainbow anymore, I want it to turn black," etc. So I never looked into that genre until I read Ringo's praise for the Cruxshadows.
Rogue is an interesting character. A Dupont the Third, and classically educated. Probably a right bastard to work for, based on the massive turn over of band members.

Not that they're identical - they're not - but I feel like there's likely a pretty good overlap between people who like The Crüxshadows and The Birthday Massacre. So, if you haven't heard them, take a listen.

Female vocalist, and not quite the same lyrical direction, but - at least for me - a lot of crossover appeal between the two. I'm a fan, anyway.

Really?

Hmm...

On a bad day think a combination of Shewolf and Delaney (Run and you just die tired)
On a so-so day, an older Jinxy.
On a good day, Anne (sans Hollywood)
In reality, just me :)

Yup. Ringo is often amazingly inconsistent with his characters, Mike is a good example of that.

You are right. It's in volume 4 Strands of Sorrow, chapter 26.
Having read the series four times I'm certain I remembered correctly. So I looked it up and in the nearly 4 years since I last read it, someone had changed the text of my copy!

I've not got the book to hand, but in your version are the last spoken words in Chapter 27;

"Navy One, say again, Navy One"

?
