What ever happened to prof Jack?

Arquillius ๐Ÿšซ

Profile

A synopsis: Prof Jack was one of the writers for the NIS universe, with his entries being Jacob and Tiffany, with a single follow up Jacob and Tiffany 2, where he leaves things on sort of a cliffhanger.

Reason for inquiry: I went back and reread these stories recently, and found nothing for the 3rd part. I had found a yahoo group at one point, but going back to it there's nothing there and no way to post. I wanted to finish reading the story line if he ever finished writing it, or at least find out why he never finished.

He had his own Yahoo Group. Obviously that has all vanished now but I looked over the old messages around a year ago to answer just that question, he last posted a message there in August 2007. There were queries later asking if anyone knew what was going on but I did not find any answers.

He had plans to re-edit the existing two stories, add chapters and stories but there was nothing after that date.

Maybe he just lost the login for the group, your link shows that he was blogging here in 2014 and the fact that his stories are not Premier Only means he was still visiting the site in September 2015.

@Arquillius

There are many reasons for an author becoming inactive. If they don't tell us why, we can only guess at their reasons.

Illness and death are two of the main causes. If the authors or the families of the authors don't inform us of the illness or death then we can only assume they won't return.

Sometimes an author becomes burned out on writing. Writer's block, lack of motivation, and inability to focus on the story's plot are just a few of the reasons for an author not posting new stories. I think this happens to most authors at one point or another. Some of us persevere, work through our problems, and start posting again; others just quit. Life also intrudes by leaving the authors with little or no time to write; a few authors tell us that they will be out of touch for a time and others just go silent.

The Readers Info website contains a listing of authors who have been inactive for 2 years or longer. Authors are added to the listing when their readers have asked the website's staff what happened to their favorite author or suggests their addition, and the author satisfies the criteria necessary for addition. These criteria are explained on the website.

@REP

The Readers Info website

On SOL, the authors are partitioned by first letter of first name, A-Z plus # for non-alphabetics.

The Author/Reader/Contributor info website also has A-Z and # - letters not instantiated by names are not in bold. The # looks bold to me but isn't a valid link. It seems the site currently is in an inconsistent state for names not starting with a letter.

If the letter is not bold it indicates no link because there are no inactive contributors listed starting with that letter (or number). The # is not bold meaning there are no inactive contributors listed starting with a number. I don't see where it is inconsistent.

@Keet

The # is not bold

It looks bold on my screen but, viewing the page source, it isn't. I just hope 2 flags doesn't die so we find out what a bold hash looks like, and also because his latest story, Dominator, is looking extremely promising.

Certainly looks promising and I'm glad we don't have to list him. On the day he posted the first chapter I emailed my co-supporters of the ReaderInfo website that 2 flags was up for listing but that he fortunately started posting again so we have another contributor not listed as inactive.

By-the-way, a bold hash looks like this: # :D

Again I had to 'view page source' to verify that because it looked unconvincing :-(

I suspect you have your screen zoomed in a little or your fontsize increased. At certain levels the font itself seems bold making the distinction between bold and regular hard to see. You can test this with ctrl+ and ctrl-. At certain steps the font suddenly seems bold.
ETA: ctrl + 0 resets the zoom level

Is that universal now? ISTR that not working on a couple browsers in the past...

On desktop I think it is, I know for certain Firefox and Chrome support it. On mobile I have no idea, no keys to press, but zooming will probable have the same result in how the font is displayed at the various zoom levels.

ETA: I checked on Chrome and at 100% the # indeed seems bold, strange. I'll see what I can do about that.

ETA 2: I made the non-active letters smaller to indicate there are no listings for that letter. Chrome has a terrible font display compared to Firefox, everything looks bolder.

Chrome has a terrible display

I concur.

They also seem to believe everyone should be forced to view a site as the web designer prefers, rather than as the viewer prefers... there's a reason I rarely inflict it upon myself. Even if it's not quite as bad as M$ products.
