There is a new story just posted that has the first chapter that is 10k long and doesn't make much sense to me.
Within 6 hours it has 69 votes with a 7.38 score. I can't see it having that high a score or is it just me?

probably just the followers of that author giving it an automatic high score because they anticipate the rest of the story being good like the past ones.
I agree it's quite hard work to understand, but that's common with exotic world building and I think I got there in the end. But there are few grammatical/spelling issues and it has the 'Science Fiction' tag premium.

There were a few stories posted yesterday in the 10-20K range. It seems like you are referring to Longshot.
It was a little difficult to understand at first. There are still many details that would have been nice to know.

Yes it was longshot. In my opinion it would have help if there was a prologue to give a back story.
I am also not a fan of opening voting in the beginning as you can only vote once and if I had voted just on this chapter I would have given it a low vote. That was why I was confused as to why it had a high score.

The system will only keep one vote per reader, but you can in fact vote more than once.
If I remember correctly, you can vote as many times as you like, but only the last vote counts.
I must say, if the OP is referring to Longshot, I didn't find the first chapter that hard to follow.
Yes, more upfront background information would be nice, but it seems the story is to be a sci-fi mystery and the plot will be about the MC discovering that information.
To provide it to the readers up front would be a spoiler.
I didn't know you can change your vote. But it makes sense as I have seen stories start good and then crash.

Once upon a time you could only vote once as SoL didn't track the voter + specific vote cast, just that a vote had been cast. But that changed several years ago.
