Patreon

I tried signing onto the Patreon site of an author who also has stories on SOL. The site come-on was that I would have access to many of the author's works there.
I signed up for $2 a month - the lowest fee.
After they got my $2 - I started clicking on some of the stories listed there, expecting to see one chapter at a time (just like SOL). EVERY TIME I did, the site told me that getting access to that particular story cost $10 a month. I clicked on every story listed - every one of them was $10 a month. Some other items - I think they were probably illustrations - told me I could get them for $5 a month.
I canceled my new membership - and presumably it only cost me $2 to find out that $2 got me nothing.

PT Barnum had it right.

You are just not their target demographic... you know, folks with more money than sense.

That's quite a lot. You can buy full-length novels on Amazon for a lot less. For example, my full-length ebook novels are $3.99 and $4.99 and my novella is $2.99 (U.S. dollars). So for $10/month you can buy multiple books on Amazon each month. I believe he's overpriced.

Even worse - that's $10/month. So if it takes 6 months for the Patreon author to finish the story, you have to pay out $60 to read the full story.

Or, to be polite, Patreon's software did not make clear what value he was getting for his money, which I strongly believe to be the case.

Jeez, for $10/month for Kindle Unlimited you get access to over a million titles to read for free, including magazines and audio books. I guess some people have Unlimited disposable income to pay that for an unpublished Indy story.

OK, here's how I've come to understand Patreon. It's a site structured to support artists you like. Nothing more. Nothing less. Some artists are authors. Some musicians. Some are bikini haul try-on girls. Seriously. It's not a tradional pay for item site. Amazon has that monopoly. If you like an artist and want to support them, go for it. If the value proposition is not there for you, don't do it.

If I may, I think I know the author of whom you are speaking. One of the great issues with Patreon, is that the sorting and filtering leaves a LOT to be desired.

To see what's available at the $2 level (or whatever support level you elect for an author), you have to go to the 'Posts' tab and click the filter for for the level. Unfortunately, even that is confusing, because Patreon switched from tiers by dollar amount to tiers by name, which means that unless you select the filter for the correct tier name, you won't see the correct set of posts.

So, assuming I'm correct in my analysis of who the author is (and the clues tell me I am), what you would have needed to do is select the 'Bronze' level in the filter, which would have shown you 57 posts of story chapters from three separate stories (one of which is not on SOL at all), including approximately 50 chapters not yet posted here, with new 2-3 new chapters posted per week. Had you contacted the author, he could have explained this shortcoming in Patreon's features.
