Engineer protagonist

lasiefo 🚫

so whats up with 50% of young male adult protagonists and 99% of middle aged males protagonists being engineers?

Not_a_ID 🚫

Probably because most of the people posting/writing stories on SOL come from a technical background, so "Write what you know" is resulting in a lot of engineers of various stripes turning up.As

That and engineers are just handy to have around when a problem needs solving. As they should at least be able to create a process, even if they cannot implement it by themselves. ;)

Where did you get those numbers? I can't even remember the last time I read a story with an engineer as the protagonist. Maybe the numbers are influenced by your choice of stories?

Never read A Fresh Start by rlfj?
Carl Buckman –the MC – studies at Rensselaer in both lifes.
Instead of living his (second) life as a respected engineer, he had nearly two terms of office as POTUS.

Nope.

a respected engineer

I recall he was a PhD in Mathematics with a concentration in Computer science. And a lot of other things, but it would be a really good idea to read the story.

Anomandaris 🚫

Sounds like he's reading a lot of Oyster50s stories. :P Middle age engineers and teens are a theme.

lasiefo 🚫

i read probably 400+ drama stories in the last years because i like the theme
drama can be in every kind of story
and certain authors are just too good at that category
and most of the protagonists were engineers
most of the time they got promoted but still nearly every one of them an engineer
in cheating stories its heavy
most husbands who get their revenge are engineers haha

Reminds me of a joke...

Q. What does an engineer use for birth control?

A. His* personality.

Doesn't answer your question, but maybe it made you laugh.

Nick

* I know several female engineers too. They're all pretty well-adjusted people with nice personalities. Then again, I don't stare at them and say dumbass things like, "Hey, you're a woman." No shit, Sherlock. And you wonder why there's a gender gap in STEM fields?

True story:

One of my friends had a young female engineer working with him in a maintenance capacity in a facility.

Q: How's she working out?

A: Man, that's one strange lady. Her husband's an engineer, too. I bet they have to plot a graph before they fuck.

No more than I spend time wondering why there is a gender gap in nursing.

It's closing. With the loss of so many manufacturing jobs, most of those without usable skills are going back to school to learn unsable skills, many in female-centric occupations like nuring because they're more likely to get jobs than in the traditional male jobs.

Hey, before you start damaging my nice glass house, my problem is, rather than relying on my own bad spelling, I stupidly installed a new spell-checker by Grammarly on my browser, and it's been nothing but trouble. Most of the recent spelling errors were inflected by Grammarly's corrections. I'm going to uninstall the entire thing and return to the default spell-check (the new one) in FireFox.

I used to have an ugly old witch as a spell-checker, but she ran out of bat's wings, went out to buy some, and hasn't been seen since.

CW, that glass house remark was directed at DS, because he himself had a typo in his question. (anD).

Spell checkers are often a nuisance. My Opera is set to German, so it's spell checker marks nearly every word I write here in posts to SOL. In this last sentence it doesn't complain about 'so' and 'in' – German words too – and it ignores one-letter-words ('I'). I try to ignore the red but it makes it harder to find typos by reading again before posting.
The iceing is when a wrong spelled English word is accepted because it's correct in German: Autor, Wort...

I can't find a switch in settings to change the language at all.

SABLE

Burmese Cat Breed Information, Pictures, Characteristics & Facts
cattime.com/cat-breeds/burmese-cats
While the original Burmese was a dark solid-brown color known as sable, he now comes in other shades as well, including blue, champagne and platinum. The cats have a compact body with a rounded head; large, expressive eyes in gold or yellow; and medium-size ears that are rounded at the tips and tilt slightly forward.

The Burmese cats that aren't dark brown are "unsable".

Well, that and historically, nursing jobs didn't pay all that well. Men had other options readily available to them which paid as well if not better, so nursing was largely ignored by men. It hasn't been until recent decades that nursing became seriously wage-competitive with work done by men. However, by then it had a solid sterotype/stigma attached to it in regards to men who pursued nursing as a career choice. As that stigma fades, it's likely that the gender imbalance in nursing will level out a fair bit. I would still expect majority female, but not by the huge margins seen in the past.

I'm deeply disappointed in both of you, DS and Helmut. I didn't think your deductive skills are that pitiful.

Geek of Ages

@lasiefo

My protagonists tend to be programmers or else what in IT because I am a programmer, and am therefore a bit more familiar with the industry and work environment. Plus, the field pays well enough that in the modern Millennial economy, the protagonist can actually have some money to be extravagant.
