Mechaber's "I Slept with a Republican"

Harold Wilson 🚫

I liked it. It was humorous, and cute, and had a good hook even without the politics - the Jewish/Irish Female Chinese Chef.

I think that last paragraph was weak. A little too wishy-washy, a little too "don't hate me for this".

Then, I voted on it, and the system said "4.33".

Apparently, the unibomber contingent is alive and well. SOL voters never cease to surprise me in a negative way.

On the one hand, scores are the mechanism we have, so clearly you're right. I'm about 3 points away in this case.

On the other hand, this wasn't a particularly opinionated piece or anything. It was just "we have different views and yet we hooked up." So I'm pretty sure I don't want to be like most readers.

Still think it's a shame, though.

I'm a Republican, much like Manny, and gave it a 9. Well written with a good understanding of how each side views the politics. I laughed several times.

I read it after reading this discussion.

Yes to all of Harold Wilson's comments, except for the penultimate para since the score is now 6.20. To tell the truth the story was a little too heavy on the politics for me—not because of what the politics were, because he handled the debate of opposites very nicely—but because I'd have preferred less of the politics and more of the food and sex.

ETA: "I've come to a very grudging admiration of Donald Trump as the ultimate "fuck you" President." is pretty much dead on, no matter which side you're on. If it matters, I don't think we can afford any more "fuck you" politics and the Orange One isn't the answer.

I'd guess the low scores are readers objecting to the politics rather than the writing, which I thought was above average.

Forgot to mention: I gave the story a 10.

Reasonable criticism, but for a short story I was willing to forgive. If it was 15k words I might not feel the same way.
