Man, was I surprised!

I expected "My Horrible Dream" to bomb in the scoring race, though it did about as I expected in the downloads count. The odd thing is that this most recent story has scored much higher than I ever expected. Lazeez have you changed the way you report the voting results, so I can't tell how many low votes I received. The report has me not receiving less than a couple of 6s, so I am led to think that I worried over nothing. Oh, well...

What I really wonder is whether or not I actually got any 1s, but they were not reported. That is important to me because it would influence what kind of stories I post. Laz, please report the 1s if they are there. Your latest comments on reporting scores to authors has me very confused.

I don't mean to be a parade-rainer but recent story scores don't seem to be consistent with an overall average of 6. Perhaps that's something that warrants investigation.

Average for visible new stories in the last 30 days is 6.7.

The last I heard, Lazeez has not changed the method used to compute scores. However, he has changed the display of raw scores. The one-bomber scores are still there and used to compute the story's score, but they are not displayed as part of our histogram data.

It might have more to do with who is able to read & score those stories. IIRC, the contest stories are Premier only, and that would generally hold to my suspicion that the 1 bombers are on freebie accounts.

It would also limit how many people vote on a story, meaning the score's adjustment wouldn't apply for some time (I believe it only applies at around 50 votes).

I changed the vote graph to show only the votes that get used in the score calculation. It was highly annoying having authors bitch, moan, complain, demand I do something about the "1 bombers", and threaten to leave over the 1s and 2s that the scoring system discards already. I no matter how many times I explained that the system already deals with those '1,2,3 BOMBS', it was never understood.

So now you only see what actually gets used. No point in me showing any votes that won't even go into the calculation of your score and having you be upset about something that has no effect on you.

For now I'm watching the feedback on the new display. if I get any more complaints then I'll go ahead and execute the plan to remove the graph and all authors would get is the final score just like what users see.

Just out of curiosity, have any of the contest stories been 1 bombed? It might be lopping off some 5's or 6's as the low end of the curve rather than 1's or 2's if it turns out the erstwhile 1 bombers are non-premier tier users of SOL.

Which could suggest an alternate scoring option for authors to pursue. Only let paying users vote until they(the author) chose otherwise. (alternate method available now: restrict the ability to SEE it to only the paying members)

Okay, now that I understand what the histogram was showing me, I have no complaints. In fact, I now like what you are doing. This was simply a case of me not understanding what was going on. Thanks for the clarification.

That's a tremendous compromise. You only see the 1s if they have any effect, which few do. However, if you've pissed off enough people for the 1s to be counted, then you're clearly pissing off a few people and need to know. Way to go Lazeez!
