Did the age of characters in a story change to non under 18 for sex stories?
Last year SOL did have some problems with their ISP (?) about the age. It lasted about a month with some authors deleting their stories, some editing the ages.

That's what I've been using as a guide, and I haven't had any problems so far.
In addition, stories submitted by a certain date --and I can't remember what is was--could have under age 14 sex because it was grandfathered in as legal. Now, those stories have to change.
I believe stories that started posting fifteen years ago (before September 2011) or earlier could have descriptive sex involving characters under fourteen. I believe that before the German assh*le made itself known last year stories could mention or infer sex involving characters under the age of 14, but were not supposed to describe that sex.

Thanks for pointing that out. Earlier this year it had been set to 18 (confirmed by Lazeez) and I was wondering how best to handle a sequel I was working on. This helps.
It was around 2012. You need your access set to full to read stories before that year that have under 14 sex, if you are a free reader. Unknown if premium users/authors need that choice.

Surely the simple solution here would be to, y'know, just not write about underage folks in sexual situations?
Ao3 seems to have an anything goes rule (which will be their downfall IMO, as there's always people looking to bring that site down due to its scope), and the other, ahem, "website what has erotica on it" has a hard stop rule at 18, for obvious reasons.

Kind of rules out writing coming of age stories when sex is involved.
Most of the good stories on here that deal with underage sex use safe sex practices and what might happen if a mistake is made.
Would make good reading for teens in places where sex ed is limited to don't do it. Those places usually also have high teen pregnancies
While I think I can guess which one you mean, 'the other' is a little vague. Off the top of my head, I can think of about six websites it could be. At least two are explicitly 'anything goes' (even more than AO3, which does have limits).
As Switch Blayde noted, it would make writing coming-of-age stories much harder. It would have an enormous impact on my own story (Variation on a Theme), which picks up with the MC and many major supporting characters fourteen years old, starting high school. I've had to reckon with it before, when the age ban was threatening. I could rewrite to move the detailed sex off-page, but that would heavily compromise one storyline (relatively early in the first book, too) which depends on the MC being able to relate details of sexual encounters that he does not know the underlying meaning of.
In other words, while one could certainly argue that there's 'sex for sex's sake,' the sex scenes add significant non-sexual context to the story and would thus be hard to simply remove.
It's one thing to say, 'don't write a stroke story about underage folks.' Maybe that's good advice; maybe it's not. But there are plenty of non 'stroke story' reasons to write about teenagers in sexual situations, and reasons why the details matter.
