Mentioning other sites by name.

elevated_subways ๐Ÿšซ

Are we allowed to mention the names of other erotic literature sites here? There is one that I might want to describe as it relates to some stories I have done there. I'm on two other sites. One is extremely sensitive about naming its "competitors;" the other doesn't seem to care. I know every site has its own quirks about various issues.

No, you can't and you shouldn't.

Well, just mentioning the name is a bit of a grey area, but an actual link is definitely against the rules.

Though otherwise, I agree with EB, you shouldn't.

In the past Lazeez has quickly deleted threads by authors advertising their stories on other sites.
He usually deletes threads after a few hours if the answer to a lost story request is a story on another site.
Partially posting a story with the balance behind an offsite pay wall will get an author's account deleted.

Promoting Patreon accounts for advanced reader copies has been tolerated as long as the stories are also posted on SOL after a reasonable delay. Laz has mentioned his intention to create a Patreon style donation system on here, so that tolerance may go away.

Paywall style stories should go on bookapy instead of promoting Amazon links.

If still in doubt, contact the webmaster directly.

erotic literature sites

We were just having this discussion in another thread. This was what Earnest said:

When I started here on Storiesonline.net (not sexstoriesonline.net) the front page declared it was a "Story site where all stories were welcome, even adult stories." In the last decade or so people have been pushing the idea it should be only for sex stories. However, that flies in the face of why the site was originally created. many years ago Lazeez posted a blog entry saying he created the site as one for all stories as he was fed up with sites being either for sex stories or for non-sex stories, and he wanted one where he could post all of his stories, regardless of the sex level. Thus he created storiesonline.net - and that's how it is today.

When he did a major update of the site pages some years back he redesigned the front page to promote the sex stories more as he saw that as a way to garner more visitors, and he was proven right. But he's never changed the core mission statement of the site.

Okay, I get it and agree to it.

It partly depends on what you say.

Both on the forum and on my blog, I' say "These stories were first posted on ASSTR," without any blowback. If the implication is to go there instead, that's a problem; if the implication is that the other site has collapsed, nobody minds.

For a long time, there was an interesting beneficial cross-connection between the two sites. Most readers would start out on ASSTR, then would eventually discover SOL, and would occasionally bounce back and forth between the two. Many of us authors would even post to both, which only helped the process.

As has been noted, most readers come here for the porn, but after a while, they start looking for something meatier--either something more involved, longer or better written, and we have writers who fit both niches. The straight out stroke stories garner most of the attention, but between hand-workout sessions, they'd relax with a chapter or two of the more serious stories.

However, there's really never been another site which has ever fit that natural co-operative role with SOL, as most simply want to siphon readers away, rather than share readers to promote their own works too.
