Several stories I have read on SOL talk about a "bubble butt" as if it is a trait to be admired. Is that just an American thing? Do other cultures find some other ("flat" maybe) to be more attractive? In either case, why is that trait considered to be (or not to be) sexy?
If your culture doesn't admire a bubble butt, I wouldn't want to be a member of it.
Yes, speaking as an American and an Ass lover, I can say that a nice, juicy, round ass is delicious and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

It is big at least in the popular media, but things like this really do come and go all the time. Live long enough, and you will likely see such things come and go.
I am old enough to remember the thin willowy look being big, and then the curves in a woman being more and more important. Then when it got outlandish, with hips and thighs the size of a Buick. And now, the bottom sticking out like a shelf does seem to be big.
But remember, such trends are likely mostly big among the teen-early 20 crowd. Most of us tend to develop in our own minds our idea of the "perfect woman" in around that age, and tend to not change much from it after that.
Myself, I will admit I do not have any real fetish about any particular part of the female body. But what I do love is proportion and general appearance with the rest of the body. I have dated gals who were B, and gals that were DD. Larger full figured women, and ones that could almost pass as teen boys. But each of them had a natural appearance, where their shape fit them wonderfully.

in terms of "potentially easy birthing", it's not projection of the gluteus maximus, but the width of the pelvis that maters.
If a woman has a fat ass on a narrow pelvis, that won't make for an easy birthing.

I suggest you find and review historical paintings, and more recently, photographs of what is considered attractive to a culture. Go back to 1300's and go forward by 50 years until the last century then goto every decade.
What is, or is not physically attractive is subject to, and does change frequently. Not to mention it is also highly subjective.

Most of the comments in this exchange seem to indicate that a bubble butt is UNattractive. Is there no consensus on what it actually means? If that's true, how is a reader to know what the author actually meant?

It can be attractive or unattractive.

I can't speak to consensus, but I would read it as a round ass. I've seen people with square asses, and people with irregular lumpy asses.
Of the three, on a woman, at least, a bubble but is more attractive. But there are limits.
A bubble but can be big or small. If it's too big or too small for the woman's frame, That is less attractive, and possibly outright unattractive.
If the highway dept. requires her to be accompanied by little imported trucks with flashing lights and warning signs when she walks down the street - I'm looking elsewhere, thank you very much.
Hell, even if she's only so large that when she steps backward I expect to hear that annoying beeping, she's too damn big.
I take the term differently.
Many -- perhaps most -- asses look to be one thing. A peach with a cleft.
Some women have an ass that looks to be two things, a shere n the eft and a sphere on the right, joined slightly in the middle like two bubbles when they touch.
One thing that researches have learned over the years, is that people are 'naturally' attracted to 'proportions'. Thus, someone who's facial features match a specific ration generally receive higher pay, are considered more attractive, and are both more popular and, generally, happier.
Of course, that's not to say that anyone else is necessarily unhappy, and there a LOTS of people, of all races, who love the stereotypical 'black ass' but more than anything else, bubble butts are striking specifically because they're non-pretentious. Someone simply has a 'nice ass', without shaking it all over or flaunting it. It's the perception of health and vitality, rather than 'will she produce a litter of kids' that draws the eye. Leers, though, are another matter entirely.
P.S. On a personal note, I come from a family that's predominately bubble-butted. My mothers has wider birthings hips, but my father, grandmother and even great grandmother had tiny round butts. I thank our Norwegian heritage. While I was never considered a 'hunk', or even got many dates when young, lots of people would stop and stare as I walked by, both males and females, so there's definitely a certain 'universal appeal' to it.
