When Does it Whop?

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

At what point does something begin to whop? The political story from Colonial America (not on SOL) that prompted the query had this first paragraph:
"When George Washington ran for the Virginia House of Burgesses, he plied potential voters with 47 gallons of beer, 35 gallons of wine, and a whopping 70 gallons of rum punch."
Would only 50 gallons of rum punch not qualified for the "whopping" label? What next? What if it had been 100 gallons? How do you beat whopping?

The whopping adjective was in front of the rum punch, but it emphasizes the massive amount of alcohol he gave them, the rum punch being the icing on the cake.

From etymonline.com

whop (v.)

"to beat, strike," mid-15c., of imitative origin. Compare Welsh chwap "a stroke," also of imitative origin; also see wap. Related: Whopped; whopping.

wap (n.)

"a hit, a blow," late 14c., probably of imitative origin. The verb (late 14c.) originally meant "to throw quickly or with violence," and in slang c. 1560-1730 it meant "to copulate." Related: Wapped; wapping.

With the quantity of alcohol involved, there was probably a lot of whopping and wapping going on, including the odd sheep or goat in the latter.

How do you beat whopping?

By having Italians involved. Then it's wopping.

Of course, when Italian tires go flat, dago wop wop wop wop.

Big Maccing?

Ahh... The infamous burger in a pun.

Red Robin is much better than both of them.

Red Robin is much better than both of them.

They seem to have branches in England, but are determined to keep quiet about them. Their branch-finder says no branches within 50 miles of England. Yet TripAdvisor has reviews of branches in London and Manchester.

There are two restaurants in England with names that start with Red Robin. However, that doesn't mean the restaurants are part of the American Red Robin chain of restaurants.

Red Robin

""When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along)" was a 1926 popular song written, both words and music, by Harry Woods."

"The song helped inspire the name of the American casual dining restaurant chain Red Robin: the owner of the original restaurant, in the University District of Seattle, sang in a barbershop quartet which frequently sang the song, and in the 1940s he renamed his restaurant "Sam's Red Robin"."

Both these quotes are from Whopopedia. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

"Wiki was introduced into the lexicon by a computer programmer named Ward Cunningham in 1995 when he created collaborative software that he called WikiWikiWeb. Wiki is Hawaiian for "fast; quick."

As a noun, wiki means "a website that allows anyone to add, delete or revise content by using a web browser." The term wiki is also used as a verb; if you wiki, you are either researching a topic on a wiki or contributing to one. As reflected in the terms WikiLeaks and Wikipedia, wiki is sometimes used in creating blended words or portmanteaus: a wikiholic devotes a vast amount of time to wiki-based projects. Similarly, a Wikipedian is a person who enthusiastically contributes to Wikipedia."

They couldn't sell Red Robin Burgers anyway, unless they included meat from actual robins. A bakery in Sussex was banned from selling Robin Tarts because there were no robins in them.

All hail the EU Empire's pettifogging bureaucrats.
