Making MS Word do both Print TOC formatting and setup for SOL formatting

Lugh ๐Ÿšซ

Maybe I want Word to automate something that it won'do, but I'd be delighted to be wrong.

If I start a large document, with Heading Level 1 chapters, I can format a TOC and auto-format page numbers of the Ch5-P1 form.

To make the Chapters Word Level 3, which properaly converts to SOL chapters, and then have L4 and L5m do I need to write the single narrative, and then convert a chapter at a time?

Word's search and replace function allows you to search a document for a format and replace it with another format For example: to change all Level 1 paragraphs to Level 3 paragraphs.

I know how to do that. Where I am stuck is generating automatic page numbers.

generating automatic page numbers

If you are working in a single chapter in a single file:

1. go into your footer.

2. type the chapter number, a dash, and then insert a page number.

If you have multiple chapters in a single file, it is a bit more complex, and specifics depend on which word processing system you are using. In Word:

1. Insert a section break before the start of each new chapter.

2. Go to multi-level list and select a list that is linked to Heading levels. You may have to tailor the number format.

3. go into your footer. Insert a page number. Format the page number to include the chapter number and restart each section at page 1.

eta: For the 'Ch5-P1' format, you can type in Ch and P when formatting the page number.

page numbering is usually in the footer which is a page setting. Have also sent a PM with other info.
