Reliability of the Sex Contents tag

Keet ๐Ÿšซ

I have run into this multiple times now and I wonder how the tag "Sex Contents" is determined.
The problem is this: The story description mentions "Warning: there is very little sex in this one" but the Sex Contents tag is Much Sex.
I read the story because it had a very high score and the story just barely qualifies for a Sex Contents tag of Minimal Sex. The little "sex" was not descriptive so it could have been tagged as a No Sex story.
There are similar situations all over SOL and it bothers me because I generally avoid Much Sex/Stroke stories and like in the above example I almost missed a very good story because of that.
Personally I think this is just as bad as leaving out important squick codes.
Is there any other way to determine the real level of sex content in a story?

The Sex Content selection is like all of the codes, done by the writer at the time of submission. Thus what the meaning is is as per each individual chooses it to mean. Most get it close to what most people expect. However, it's done by a drop-down box and it's very easy for someone to accidentally click on the wrong option, especially if they're doing it from a mobile device.

When you find a story with what you think is the wrong sex content marker or wrong code send the Web Master a message with a link to the file and the details of your concern. The moderators will review the codes and the story and then adjust them if they feel it needs adjusting.

Web Master

This title has some overtones like a BDSM "master" or Spider-man, originally a comic book character (spiders have webs). Moderator is much more moderate.

I read somewhere, probably one of these forums, that the sex content tag was not part of the original configuration of the site and that when it was introduced all stories were given the Much Sex tag as a default.

Perhaps the story Keet mentioned was caught in this default tagging after publication.

That would explain the many stories with the Much Sex tag. I haven't seen the same problem with Stroke or Some Sex, only with Much Sex. And now I think about it, it does happen with older stories.
I will take this into account when determining if it's a story I want to start reading. In some cases, like the example I mentioned, I will take the description more seriously than the Sex Contents tag. Thank you for providing this enlightenment.

I'm pretty sure you have that from me, although it would have been better if Laz had weighed in on this one.
I believe the tag was introduced some time around late May 2006. Most authors who were active at the time updated that tag although - checking names at random - Lazlong mostly left things alone and Lazlo Zalezac ignored many of his older stories.

(edited to fix the date estimate, keet got a moving target)

I believe the tag was introduced some time around 2007, it was certainly after late May 2006. Most authors who were active at the time updated that tag although - checking a name at random - Lazlong mostly left things alone.

My example was a Don Lockwood story from 2003. His last story was dated 2005, so your 2006/2007 time would make that story a candidate for the automatic Much Sex tag and the reason why it was never updated by the author.

and the reason why it was never updated by the author.

Lazeez frequently uses the Forum to announce his new features and additions to the website. That is a good thing, but it doesn't help the authors who do not participate in the Forum. The banner announcements on the web pages also help, but the authors may not think of how the announcement will affect things like the coding of their prior stories.

I don't have a good solution to the problem that I would want to propose.

as I said early - send Lazeez a message with the story link and he'll review it and make whatever fix is needed. If he can contact the author he'll ask them to make the change, otherwise he'll probably adjust the code himself.

The problem I was referring to is not how to fix the coding on a particular story. The problem I saw was authors don't review the codes they applied to their prior stories. Instead, they apply code changes from that point on. As I said, I don't know how to fix that problem.

The same fix as I mentioned above works well. Several times I've mentioned stories which didn't have a tag that was introduced after the story was posted and it fits the code, and Lazeez fixed them up. If he got flooded with reports he might object, but he's been happy to fix reported stories in the past because the more accurate the codes are the better the site is.

I reported my example story as coded wrong. I will report other stories too if the code is clearly wrong.

That's the best way to handle it. Tell Lazeez and let him decide.

When I added the sex contents, I didn't do 'Much sex' for all stories.

I used various methods in setting the sex contents level.

at the time we had the 'no-sex' tag. All stories that had it got 'no sex', then I used the slow tag to decide what gets much sex and what gets some sex.

If the story was sex story and was shorter than 20 KB and had some of the sexual activities tags, then it got the stroke label.

I don't remember exactly when I did the sex contents label. I think I actually added it to the engine when I started finestories in 2010.

Some time around the last week of May 2006. I remember that someone had just posted a drugged-stream-of-consciousness masquerading as a story and it got the code "Much Sex". Looking around a couple of other authors today made it clear that the current system was in place by early June that year.
There was an announcement made at the time.

I never knew that. If it's true, it was a poor decision. I also believe changing the definition of "stroke story" was also a poor decision and adds to the sex-content confusion.

As to not reading any story labeled as "much sex," all I can do is shake my head. "Stroke," yes, but "much sex" should have all the plot and character development as a story without sex.

Uther_Pendragon ๐Ÿšซ

@Keet

Almost all my stories end up with "Some Sex."

They almost all are centered on sex, and I can't call that "minimal."

OTOH, A multi-chapter story culminating in the characters' first intercourse ain't "much sex."

And I refuse to do "stroke." I noted in my blog that a short-short which started with the characters going into the bedroom and ended soon after orgasm wasn't stroke. It revealed personality.

If the author is active (recent story and/or blog updates) you might try to send them a note asking why a story is coded a certain way.

Assuming late May 2006 is correct, there are not many authors still active. I think Argon fixed his codes and I'm not sure we are going to get the chance to speak to Lazlo Zalezac again.

I agree that for older stories many of the authors may no longer be active for various reasons.

On the other hand, it could be that you disagree with how a relatively recent story (last three or four years) was coded.

I'm only offering an explanation as to why most stories posted at/before the end of May 2006 have the "Much Sex" tag. If some more recent stories have it, that is down to the author.
