I got some new glasses a couple weeks ago. Even though I've had bifocals for years now, I'm having a little trouble getting used to them. This morning, I started working a crossword puzzle. The first clue, 1-Across I saw as "like most semen, supposedly". I spent the next five minutes or so trying to think of a four-letter word that would work. Then I went back and reread the clue, and realized the word was "seamen". Problem solved.
I've been wearing bifocals since the early 80's. I started with lined bifocals and had to switch to the no lines as the hard divider across the center of my eye effected my driving, and I was an OTR driver. Since then I have worn the progressive bifocals with the dividing line slightly below my pupil. It is a hair lower than most optometrists set it. Unless I am extremely tired, I have no problems reading.
I was the other way. I got progressive as my first bifocals and I had problems swiveling my head so much, I only had clear vision through the center of the lens. I am used to using most of the lens for quick looks, the change in my scan procedures threw me off to badly.
People who can use them love them, I'm in the percentage who can't use them.
Now that I think further on this, it was mostly the rear view while driving, I rarely tilt the head to look there. Of course OTRs have to keep their heads on swivels for the idiots trying to do a colonoscopy. Different needs.

Vote for progressive lenses, here. No line to worry about although you do need to get used to adjusting your head. That said, I seem to misread words regularly but can't put the blame on the lenses.

I asked for and have my bifocals inverted. Most people have their glasses set up where you look threw the top half of the lens for distance and the bottom for reading. But for me and the nature of how I work and the set-up of monitors in the equipment I use my bifocal lenses are set-up with the reading on top and the distance on the bottom.
A friend, who is an industrial electrician uses trifocal glasses for work, since a lot of what he is working is above his head. Magnification top and bottom and distance in the middle.

Sounds like a very understandable adjustment he had made to suit his need for the job.
Actually, it was from a corporate advisory given to him by his foreman when he was transferred into the department. It also required them to be safety glasses with side screens and a retention strap to hang them around his neck in case they should get knocked of while working on a ladder or scaffold.

I don't mind those OSHA requirments. Alot better then having to where goggles or safty glasses over top of your precription glasses.
First, double check your lens and make sure it is as prescribed. Secondly, go back to the prescriber and double check your prescription and make sure it is correct.
Twice I've had to redo my bifocal lenses because they messed up my prescription. One time they wrote the numbers opposite of what they were supposed to be.
I also had the folks at Voldemart (Walmart) vision build me a second set of glasses for my computer work. I lose my long range distance and instead I have a mid distance for the three 32" 4k displays that are more than arm length away from the chair. This pair is much lighter frame and lenses are also lighter so they are more comfortable all day.
But you might have a bad scrip, best to check it out.

I don't know if what a former co-worker told me was true since he was always making a joke. But he said he knew bifocals weren't for him when he got them, went to the restroom at a restaurant, stood at the urinal, and peed on his shoes.

Takes a bit to get uses to bifocals but once your body adjusts you just do things without even needing to think about it. just a new skill set that you adapt to.
Never mastered bifocals b/c they gave me too much trouble while flying. Need near vision to make the instrument panel sharp, and need far vision to clearly see outside. The constant transition between 60cm to infinity focus was too much for me in some situations, mostly b/c I need a full field of vision while looking outside, so the lower visual field is lost.
The solution was to wear two pair of glasses, and to keep my head back away from the panel. It is messy to have two pair slung around my neck, but it works. I told the doc about it. The aviation ME did not seem concerned during my last flight physical.
I guess I really have no one to blame but myself. Mom always told me if I masturbated too much, I'd go blind, and I apparently stopped just in time.
I'm (semi-) old school. I wear progressives for driving, because that actually fits the model - distance vision high (for the road), close-up low (instruments, phone when stopped, etc). When not driving, I wear single-focus reading glasses, usually low on my nose. When I'm using a computer, I want the whole field of view corrected, and I push them up.
I tried progressives while using the computer, and I can't do it. Peripheral vision is too important to how I use it.
