AI record contract

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

I heard on the radio just a fragment of a news story. It said that a record company has signed a $19 million contract with "an AI recording artist." They played a snippet of a song created by AI and it sounded like a woman with a voice that could cover several octaves, including some very high notes. I missed a lot of the specific details, like the name of the recording artist or who exactly it was who signed it (her?). I did not find that story to be welcome news. It left me with a sense of unease.

Xania Monet. Two albums out on Apple Music, and over 17 million streaming sessions. Made the billboard top 100.

Sounds like highly produced R&B.

This is the logical extreme of the idea of music as a product controlled by labels. Every industry tries to maximize profits by cutting middlemen out of the supply chain. "Art" is now a product. Artists are an expense.

Given that the bulk of profits are now coming from live performance, it seems there's still a gap in the model.

@solitude

I've seen the show. It was bloody good, and at times very convincing. But what would they do if the crowd called for an encore?

Gorillaz minus the human musicians.

I remember the discussions that followed the release of "The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds" back in the 60's. Many thought that the Moog Synthesizer should be banned from things like Grammy consideration, but the argument was presented that it was just another instrument that was played (programmed) by a performer.
