Trump (verb)

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

I wanted to use an expression from my childhood in a story. It contains the verb 'trump', which means something like walking heavy-footedly. A quick scan of dictionaries on google showed no existence of that meaning. But a SOL search on 'trumping' found 53 stories in which at least 5 were used with the meaning I failed to find.

I'm tempted to use the expression as I remember it but will it be so unfamiliar as to disengage the readers?

NB I apologise for using Google. They're applying for a global TDM (text and data mining exemption) so that they can use copyrighted material to train their AI without permission or payment.

That's the definition I'm familiar with from when I grew up. Google and other things want to capitalize that now.

No.

And "first-year students" are still "freshmen..."

Sure you didn't mean "tramp"?

"Trump" as a verb comes from the Bridge card game. I don't know how to play Bridge, but "trump" means something like "better" (my idea trumps your idea).

Interesting. I always thought to "Trump", was to fart. It could be regional.

'Trump' is an old form of trumpet so, as a variant of 'trouser trumpet', I can see the rationale.

"Tromp" was the common use age in my time and place. Trump was to play the high card, in life or actual cards.

There is also the card game "Top Trumps" where you picked a stat on the card that you hoped 'trumped' that of the other players whereupon you would win their card (plural for games with more than two players).

I've always seen Trump used in the context of override. As in your boss's way of doing something always trumps your way, even if your way is better.

@Switch Blayde

And other card games have trump cards as well.

Farking Nora this is old, but I'm pretty sure the actions when singing along to 'Nellie the Elephant' included foot stamping when it came to "trump, trump, trump".
