POV for Blurb

Switch Blayde ๐Ÿšซ

From what I'm reading, the blurb (what is the description in SOL) is written in 3rd-person present tense. So even if the novel is written in 1st-person, the blurb is written in 3rd.

I think the weirdest thing about it is, in the story the character is known as "I" but in the blurb is known by their character name.

Any feelings about that? Any comments?

I never saw the description field as an excerpt of the story itself. More like something I use to tell readers what to expect when opening the story.

Consequently, I fill that description field in third person, as the author, instead of letting one of my fictional characters break the fourth wall and give a TL;DR.

FWIW, since I'm rubbish at writing blurbs, I agree. I do not expect to see first person in a blurb.

You wouldn't use 'I' in an elevator pitch either.

Like Sarkasmus, I view the blurb and the story as separate and the POV of one has no bearing on the POV of the other.

I seem to remember seeing a few stories over the years that use first person in the blurb, but not many.

To me the blurb isn't of the story, it's about the story. Using third person there seems perfectly reasonable.

The "Blurb" for many stories, in particular, published books, the Blurb is not (often) written by the author, but by someone working for the publisher. It is to help "Sell" the book to people who likely have no knowledge of the author, nor any previous works.

Even on SoL the "Blurb" is sometimes written by someone other than the author.

I could see writing a "Blurb" as if it were First Person by (a, or the) MC in the story. That would likely be tricky; not appealing to some people.

The Blurb is for the Author to let people know about the gist of their story; Or a "tease" or other means of encouraging people to read their story.

Writing a Blurb in First Person might be a way of enticing people to read... Might.
