Ren (OT)

awnlee jawking 🚫

Where does the name 'Ren' come from? How common is it? I've seen it used for both male and female characters but does one predominate?

Thanks for your help,

AJ

The origin seems to be Japanese:

@Keet

Thank you.

I didn't know/remember that Kevin Bacon's character in 'Footloose' was called Ren.

Don't forget Ren & Stimpy. One of the best cartoons ever.

Ren was also the MC in https://storiesonline.net/s/16034/hatchery-road (and Stimpy his philandering wife, at least until the impending divorce). Of course his new girlfriend had to point out that "Stimpy was the nice one".
Lovely story.

Is that Ren male or female?

@ystokes

Ren, from Ren and Stimpy was named in "honor" of Ren the Unclean, one of the Nine Nazgul (a former Human King, entrapped by the Enchantment of his Ring of Power, bound to Sauron, and the One Ring (JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and the Simarilion).

Ren was a male Chiwawa dog with anger issues. If you never watched them, you really should. Best if you are stoned.

Chiwawa

Dat's Chihuahua, supposedly named after the Mexican state of the same name, except that they are called ChihuahueΓ±o in Spanish.
It could be worse - they are related to another type of dog called Xoloitzcuintle. Seriously.

I knew I spelled it wrong but that is one of the limits with spellcheck, you really need to know most of the right letter in the first place. Spellcheck told me I spelled it right.

the limits with spellcheck, you really need to know most of the right letter in the first place.

That's where Google comes in handy. I typed "chiwawa" into Google and it came up with the correct spelling as a suggestion. It even said "a dog breed" next to it.

When I have no idea how to spell a word, I type what sounds like the word and Google usually tells me the correct word and spelling.

Anytime I see/hear Chihuahua, I remember Les Nessman in "WKRP in Cincinatti". I seem to recall him pronouncing it as Chy hooah hooah.

Or maybe I am confusing it with when he said the famous golfers name. Chy Chy Rodre Gweeze

Les Nessman

He gets married every week, the day after tuesday and the one before thursday is wed Nes day. Or maybe Nes Less man gets married. He might be a bigamist, if he plays big games. Or he gets a divorce every week after getting married.

It always used to remind me of that.

It now reminds me of a little taco stand I've driven by a number of times, which advertises
'Chihuahua Breakfast Tacos'

They didn't have enough room in the electronic sign for 'Style'.

It makes a difference.

Ren is occasionally short for Renata or similar names.

I have also met one woman named Wren.

Thanks.

I think I've heard it used as an shortening of Lauren.

Presumably those are female names.

In that story I linked to earlier, "Ren" was Soren.

@awnlee jawking

I do not think that Ren can be considered a gender-specific name.

If I were reading a story, and I came across, "Ren phoned to invite me to a party," I would not want to guess much about Ren. With a pronoun, like "Ren phoned to tell me her plans for the party," (or "his plans") I might at least determine Ren's gender. If I read, "Ren whipped out her dick," I could guess that Ren was female with some anatomy that is less common for that gender.
