@dragonmike1973In my story Azatlan Portal https://storiesonline.net/s/25148/aztlan-portal
A leader of some Goblin scouts is an important secondary character, he has two trusted companions, and adopts a puppy; the rest of his unit are just "spear carriers" there are several Magisters too. They are present in the early chapters, but won't be seen for a while after chapter 15, or so.
Several "Fey" a "demi-Urk" and a polymagus (shape shifter) are briefly in the story in parts of chapters 16 and 18. They are part of a "Special Reconnaissance Team" infiltrating Chihuahua. Their arc is becoming prominent again around chapters 26 and 27.
There are other inhuman and demi-human characters.
However, for most of the first 25 chapters, most of the story is from the perspective of people from our Earth c.2018; as more people begin taking the situation seriously, more will be seen of the aliens.
Occasionally, the aliens comment upon curiosities such as big screen TVs, cold beer from the tap (but it's Weak "small beer"), they find utility of vehicles. They are impressed by the Firepower and range of firearms. However, they are contemptuous of our lack of magical abilities.
My intention is to tell a story about Asymmetrical Warfare, such as in Afghanistan, Iraq, or even what is happening in Ukraine. I wanted to avoid the politics and biases of actual events.
Magic vs. Technology is an Asymmetrical conflict. I am trying to portray interesting characters to experience unusual events.
My story is multifaceted, and slow, as wars tend to be. As we see lack of preparations and reliable Logistics severely effects a military campaign.
Death and serious injury, becoming refugees, and other matters are very serious. So, I try to add some levity to parts of the story. I was an Infantry NCO, who experienced multiple deployments, and some combat. We often indulged in various means of amusing ourselves.
