To be fair, OP seems to have liked Gateway - What Lies Beyond that he mentioned in his post, and if I recall correctly, the people from the future use modern guns, ATVs etc there. Now I haven't read cmsix's stories, but from what you wrote it sounds pretty similar to GWLB, minus the aliens.

I had never heard of either story. "Release that witch" looks to be a half-decent translation from the original Chinese, possibly even translated automatically. Most names are European but some are Chinese (untranslatable?), an incongruous mixture.

No, it's not automatically translated. Though it has some overabundance of culturally different phrases liked "Oh, it's like that!"
And I don't remember any Chinese names except for the protagonist's initial name, that never gets mentioned again. He is always called by his European name, Robert.

"Release that Witch!" is one of the most popular Chinese webnovels in the west. Because it is one of the most accessible for western audiences and the kinda "normal" plot and setting.

There is also Eric Flint's series, "1632" about an American mining town transported into 30-year-war Germany.

The 1632 universe has some really good world building. An awful lot of top notch research into period technologies, and what technological advances can be implemented given that tech base combined with the resources found in a medium-sized public library, and the various types of resources that could reasonably be found within a West Virginia mining community. Hell, afaik your age is within a year or so of mine so anything from before the Napoleonic Wars is stuff I'm too young to remember.

the chinese novel is still ongoing, so who knows when it will end. Thank god the translation has a big release schedule. It was 14 chapters a week, but it dropped to 7 a week. But still better than the previous translator who just stopped someday after the schedule got very irregular.
With the current schedule, we are approx. a year behind.

I put it on hold at chapter 530.

Pity the author is completely pussy-whipped and chickened out of the harem route because his wife forbade him to do it. Also, I dislike how easily everything comes to him (which is a glaring problem in most Chinese stories), because just as he needs something to advance technological development a witch with the necessary power falls into his lap. That being said, it's an engaging read if you look past its faults, though nothing especially novel when it comes to stories with this premise.

At the very least the author has some idea of how European medieval society worked and doesn't make the same blunders most Asian authors do when they write about a setting inspired by past Europe.

Oh, was that it? He keeps hinting at that, but never goes too far (at least up to chapter 700 where I stopped).
