14 year old girls want to fall in love. 14 year old boys want to bang something! I have a very difficult time picturing a 14 year old boy wanting to make a lifetime commitment to a 30 year old woman.
Well it's not really more odd than a 13-14 year old girl committing to a 40 year old man. I think that boys and mens hormones are greatly exaggerated in most stories on SOL. In my own experience growing up, and that of my friends, we were getting interested in the opposite sex around that age, sure. But not more so than girls did. When girls hit puberty, they were just as interested in sex as the boys. They were not like naive 8 year olds that want to get married and play house. Of course some girls were romantic and wanted to fall in love, but then again, so did some boys. It was not split like all the girls in my school at 14 wanted to find true love, and all the boys wanted to get laid. It was more like some girls wanted to fall in love, some wanted to experiment, and some boys wanted to fall in love, and some wanted to experiment. There weren't any noticable difference between genders really.
And hormones are ridiculous in alot of stories. Stories makes it sound like hormones makes one lose the control to even think, like someone jacked up on hard aphrodisiacs. Just look at all the DoOver stories. You got emotionally mature men being put in a teenagers body. And apparently they lose all self control, all maturity and intelligence when they see a girl, because hormones.
Maybe american guys are just more affected by hormones than where I grew up, and they really lose all control to think rationally around girls, I don't know. It could be a cultural thing, that americans find it more acceptable to blame acting like an asshole on hormones.
My point is, realistically, a 13 year old girl is not going to want to commit to a 45 year old man any more than a 14 year old boy would to a 30 year old woman.
Because Smart Girls is fiction, oyster50 has written the girls to be much more mature than their actual age, and very intelligent. I fail to see why one couldn't write a story where a boy is more mature and able to act older than his age aswell, because as I see it, it's just as (im)plausible as the girl scenario.
