What's your first choice tale when dealing with a large harem?
Arguably aroslav's "Living Next Door to Heaven 1". It's tagged as polygamy/polyamory, not harem, but it's right on the line in my opinion.
The author does a good job of establishing the girls as having unique personalities and the protagonist as a good guy, but it's not clear why none of the girls have other partners.
Yes, but the overall dynamic still feels more like Brian and all his girlfriends, not one big poly group where everyone shares. At least to me. YMMV.
I think Lucky Jim 2 qualifies as well - almost 20 wives. And they are wives. The king fudged the wedding contract.
I feel lucky by cmsix. Question is will anyone ever finish it?
Cmsix has many unfinished tales. Fortunately the stopping point of any specific tale is often close to a logical end. At least in my mind.
Then... His writing style is unique. Obviously an intelligent individual raised in the NE corner of Texas.
I cannot help but wonder how many of his tales have some biographical content? Log truck driver. Working at the steel factory. Horses and mules. At least as a close observer of what works and what doesn't as far as training the animals in a gentle way.
So... I cannot imagine any other individual to have the same sorts of experiences that filter throughout all of Cmsix's tales.
I know I could not do it and he is one of my favorite authors. One of those would if I could deals.
Actually Cmsix has a bit of a reputation on SOL for inspiring more new authors than any other, mainly because, after reading a few, most think "Hell, I could write a better story than this crap!". That's mostly because, rarely ever preplanning his stories, he just wrote, only to belatedly discover the central story issues/incompatibility.
Unfortunately, there are no recent new-writer inspiring authors. Now, most readers don't find any stories they like and just quit following SOL for a time, rather than anyone actually being inspired to write themselves.
I was hoping to help fill in the gap, yet I'm now learning more by taking chances with my writing, trying new, unfamiliar techniques, I'm in no hurry whatsoever to publish anything. Sometimes the whole 'publish or perish' mentality inhibits creativity, rather than driving it. As well-written stories are too difficult to compete with, and unreadable stories rarely inspire much of anything.
May I recommend the Florida Friends series by Dual Writer. In this series he created at least three separate harem groups and a fourth in formation. Each of the female harem members is intelligent, ambitious, highly sexed and drawn to reluctant, bright, talented and adventurous males.
For me, my 'peak harem' choice is Aroslav and especially his 'Team Manager' series. It hits all my buttons in terms of good harem. Granted, in my personal view at least, his other series are YMMV depending on your tastes (some hew closer to polygamy while others hew closer to polyamory and sharing/swinging).
there's a few others i'd pick but i cant remember them off-top because it's been a long while.

I wish I enjoyed FantasyLover's stories - the premises always sounds right up my alley. I really, really can't stand their writing style though.
Many stories in this thread, while great, also has sharing with other men. I don't know if that's something you have a problem with but I know that it's not necessarily the same kink as a harem full of women so ymmv.
I'd recommend Daze in the Valley by Jay Cantrell. Despite the premise of the porn industry, none of the involved ladies are with other guys if I recall, and it's an extremely good read!
I will add Xalir's unfinished "My Journey" stories to the list.
The MC might argue with the harem classification but I certainly believe it fits for the core females at least (once they return anyway).
