Interesting, I have never read that story. In his final story (Emend by Eclipse) one of the MCs had been married to someone like that in his "first life". When he was granted a second pass through life he avoided the woman - Joyce - and she died of an overdose not long after she would otherwise have met him.
Wes Boyd had a character - Jennlynn Swift - who was a part time sex worker in several of his stories, but I don't think any of them are on this site. She did eventually get married and hang up her heels, I think her husband was a couple of years younger than him but that could be wrong. "Magic Carpet" and "Hearts of Gold" have her as the MC.

As somebody who has had a lot of contact with prostitutes and strippers, I think this whole thing is foolish.
I lived in what is basically a red-light district of a medium sized town in North America, worked as a bouncer at a strip club and pizza delivery for a while. I lived for nearly ten years in a building half of which was rented to prostitutes most of the time. So I had sex workers as neighbors, as coworkers, as clients and as acquaintances as well as getting services from them. I talked with them, I dated them and had at least ten proposition for marriage from them.
My experience says there is no such thing as a 'hooker with a heart of gold' unless you catch her at her start, as in you're her first customer and you rescue her. Beyond that, they're permanently damaged.
Any woman that makes money selling her body for any longer than a day will have a warped mind. Relationships become transactional. They learn not to give anything without something in return. Love and intimacy become things to sell and make money from. Most of them start believing that all they need to bring into a relationship is pussy.
The worst thing about sex workers is that the vast vast majority of them (over 99%) don't respect the kind of man that would fall for them. They think that if you're desperate enough to take in a hooker, that means to them you're a loser that isn't worth their respect and they would treat you like shit. You have to keep them in their place for them to respect you, and that usually means treating them like the trash they are.
Their mental status is never good for a reasonable relationship.
But, then again, this thread is about fantasy and fiction, so anything is possible. If an author can write about traveling through time back to your own body and have a do-over, then a hooker with a heart of gold is infinitely more plausible I guess; but almost as unlikely in real life.
It sounds like Bob Banger is familiar with the low-rent end of the market. It's somewhat different with high-end escorts. They have to take care of themselves and be able to hold a conversation. It's an attractive proposition for university students to earn enough to pay off their student loans. Some even choose to stay in the business after they graduate. But it is a short career and finding a husband is a valid exit strategy. Is love involved? I don't know, but the ones I know about seem happy enough, although they tend to shun social situations in case they accidentally bump into former clients.
I'm afraid 'Pretty Woman' is still a fantasy.

As for prostitutes, the only person I've known who I knew had been a prostitute was long retired by the time I met her — first as a guest of the state, then getting married to a nice guy, and, eventually, regaining custody of her youngest (who had been a baby when she was arrested.)
