Depends on how and what you use.
I use Word and use it's function for italics, and then I save as an html file to upload to the site. There are other ways and there are instructions on how to do so on the home page.
I was wrong, it's accessed via the author page, not the home page.

EDIT: The TLDR version is thus.
Italic is specified by .
Example:
This sample shows tag usage.
This Text is italicized.
Would look like this:
This sample shows tag usage. This Text is italicized.
NOTE: the tag cannot span paragraphs. To make a whole section italics, check the multi-paragraph styles section.
EDIT2: Which of course, didn't work because the back end did as it was told. It needs to have funny bracket { then i then funny bracket} to start italics, then funny bracket and backslash / followed by i and then closed funny bracket to stop italics. I wonder if it will allow this.. LOL
I don't use that technique to italicize, but I think you're asking if a space is required before the first _ and after the second _ as in xxxxx _very_ xxxx. I believe the spaces are required.
Since it would appear that there is some confusion as to what you are actually asking Paige, I should point out that Laz has incorporated a rather handy Formatting Previewer https://storiesonline.net/author/formatPreviewer.php
That you can use to double check things, like whether or not spaces are needed for something to work. Simply put the troublesome line in the left box, hit 'preview' and see how it looks. Adjust as required. It's a great bit of programming that I've only recently found and started to use.
