I just finished a story and noticed that there has been a slight change. The options are the same, but now they are preceded by a letter, from "a You call this a story" to "j Most amazing story."
I'm just wondering why the change?

My guess is Lazeez wants to get away from the 1โ10 rating connotation.
My suggestion would be to leave the letter out. Just have the description.

Rather hard to do when a story's rating is between 1 and 10.
I noticed that a couple of days ago. I rated a story with old display and read another and saw the new display.
Personally, I don't see any advantage to having the letters. If anything, I would want numbers to make it easier to relate to the story rating. If I give a story a 6 I can relate my opinion of the story to others easier than relating a g to the numeric value.

I believe that's what Lazeez doesn't want.

That doesn't make much sense. The whole point of a rating system is for comparison, and a quick indication of the stories worth.
And replacing the numbers on the various pages with the "Crap, Good, Great etc" would take up too much space, and A, B C etc would just be a less easily decipherable equivalent to the numbers.
And you don't want to end up with a Uber type rating system where 4.2 out of 5 means mass murderer & 4.7 out of 5 is not bad and 5 means everything from Ok to exceptional.
Hence i'm wondering why the a, b etc.
Lazeez gets what he wants, but my preference is still numbers (i.e. 1-10).
It's still numbers.
The change was made so that vision impaired people can still select from all the possible options when voting on a story.
Yes I understood that from what Lazeez posted. He placed letters, not numbers, in front of the descriptions to make it easier for people who are blind. It would have been just as easy to use numbers, and I feel numbers would have been easier to use for all of us.

I have to admit that when I choose a score I count the categories to see what number I'm actually giving.
I think about my opinion relative to my concept of an average story, and just how much more/less it is to average.
The Not Bad (6) rating is just slightly above the ratings average (5.5), so that's my usual starting point. Then I go up or down according to my opinion of the story. I don't think about the rating's number, just how far toward 1 or 10 it is. Of course as further chapters are posted I adjust the rating accordingly.
Or if I want to give the story an f, I could count the number of ratings from a to e and from g to j, then try to figure out a ratio. :)

I don't worry about that, I just select the description that most accurately describes how I feel about it.
Considering I won't vote on a story I haven't finished, "e Some Good, Some Bad" (or OK for short) is as low as i'll ever vote.

I do almost the same. I don't vote on a story I didn't finish and the stories I do finish are most likely to be "good", "very good", or "great". The highest score I hardly ever tough because there are very few "most amazing" stories, even in print.

The story scores on SOL are meant to compare the stories published on SOL. I think you're hitting out of bounds when you compare them with the world of literature.

No offense, but some stories here are better then some printed stories.

Why should that offend me? I even agree with you.

I apologize, I misused the word "offense". Sometimes being non-English causes that sort of mistakes.
OK, people, this discussion isn't really going to do much or go anywhere. Lazeez has made a change because he felt it was needed. I suspect I know why the change was made, but I don't know why. There's a psychology at play here.
Most people have a different mind set they use when rating something from 0 to 10 than when they rate something from bad to great, regardless of if the actual scale options in place are the same or not. Thus he's more likely to get a more realistic evaluation with a word based scale than a straight number based scale. Also, having numbers beside the words will partially trigger the number based mind set, thus replacing the numbers with letter should remove that trigger aspect.
Having the letters in an ascending order will help some people realize which is the higher value word statement, it also makes it easier for him to properly ID the word based evaluation when going through the code at a later date.
However, when you get down to it, whatever rating system is in place is mostly irrelevant beyond the fact of there being a system in place.
typo edit
The change is not what any of you suspect.
I implemented an auto-submit on the form. You change the vote and as you let go, it submits without the need for clicking 'vote'.
However, it turned out to cause a problem for blind readers and they couldn't select certain votes because 'good' and 'great' started with G and the form submitted right away.
So, I added the letters for blind readers.

Thanks for the explanation.
