What you are asking for is censorship, and censorship is not a good thing.

Technically, he's asking for consideration. But like with most things, his solution is overly broad, so it ends up forcing censorship on everyone. The key is always finding a solution which works for the majority of people, rather than forcing everyone to always do what you THINK they should! If your solution doesn't work as advertised, you need to abandon it and revoke its implementation, something that few people will do because they're all so damn proud, they can never admit defeat, no matter how mistaken they were! :(

The best rule of thumb, is to quit EVERY thread after the first dozen posts, as the subject quickly gets lost and everyone starts arguing over the minor details. If you haven't learned anything within a dozen posts, you never will!

This means that casual readers shouldn't ever read beyond that limit, as the additional post will ALL be written by us pedantic authors arguing obscure details that no one, besides us, gives a shit about!

I'll argue with you about that. Some of the best discussions in a thread occur much later than 12 posts in the thread.

I vaguely remember a 'scientist' claiming that if you hadn't met your optimum life partner within the first 13 candidates, then you almost certainly never would because every subsequent candidate would be inferior to one you'd already rejected.

I was struck by the similarity between 12 and 13.

Maybe the best discussions, but those tend to devolve into specifics which aren't as interesting to casual readers. But if you want to avoid the arguments and obsession with the obscure details of language, then it's best to get in and out quickly, to avoid the quagmire.

I agree. Everyone makes spelling and grammatical mistakes in their forum postings and if they were all critiqued, probably less than 10% of all forum posts would further the discussion.

As to thread drift, I don't think I've ever read one to the end that I hadn't started. I very often utilize the green dot. And even when it's mine, if it drifted I briefly skim those posts that don't have my name in it.

That was my main point with the twelve posts. Generally, if someone requests help, it'll be answered immediately, while the protracted debates following it really don't relate to the initial discussion, but to some esoteric details about language or phrasing.
