Forum moderators?

Kiluring 🚫
Updated:

Would it be possible to have some moderators managing the forums? The thread that made me think about this is a recent one in the recommendations section.

Female 1st time masterbating

Out of the 15 comments there, there is only ONE that offers any recommendations that the poster asked for. I think that moderators should be able to keep comments relevant to the post. Because he misplaced an 'u' for an 'e', he got 14 comments making fun of his spelling mistake instead of helping him find something that he might like to read. Despite his spelling mistake, what he was looking for in a story was clear to see.

This thread is not the only one where a simple thread asking for recommendations have spiralled to something else, sometimes it's long winded discussions about things irrelevant to the original post.

I'd like to see some moderators or system in place to keep the discussions to the discussion forums, and make sure that the comments in the recommendations section is helpful and relevant to the original post. Also, English isn't my first language, please don't make fun of me for any errors I might have written.

Do you volunteer for this job? Or are you interested in contributing the money to hire someone to do so? Our beloved manager is fully occupied with other considerably more important issues. Humor is an integral part of the forum. It would be an against um if we were not for the issues we discuss.

The problem you describe isn't due to SOL Forum members being uncivil, instead it's because the Forum is predominated by such persnickety authors. Since it's their JOB to watch their language and catch spelling mistakes, they're quick to notice any typos quickly. And when they do, they pounce, not to humiliate anyone, but simply to serve as an object lesson to all the OTHER authors inhabiting the forum.

It's a weird dynamic, and you'd think we'd be intelligent enough to spot who's an author and who isn't, but it seems we're not quite that intelligent!

In the end, you should send a comment to your favorite authors, requesting they STOP abusing innocent readers. Maybe they'll listen, maybe they won't, or maybe they never read their emails, but at least you'll have served notice that they're being Incredibly stupid and hurtful and need to stop it!

Hope that helps. 'D

@Kiluring

What you are asking for is censorship, and censorship is not a good thing.

Making fun of someone is not appropriate and the posters in the specific section of the forum should be telling people to knock it off. We all make typos in our posts and it is no big deal. If it is out of hand, there is a thumbs down symbol in the bottom right corner of the person's post. Click that and a message form appears that you can use to explain the problem to the webmaster.

Yes the discussion drifts from the original topic, that's called thread drift, but that is not a bad thing. Yes those new discussions can be longwinded and uninteresting, but others have the right to discuss what they want to the extent they want. If you don't like it, do what I do - stop reading the thread.

What you are asking for is censorship, and censorship is not a good thing.

Technically, he's asking for consideration. But like with most things, his solution is overly broad, so it ends up forcing censorship on everyone. The key is always finding a solution which works for the majority of people, rather than forcing everyone to always do what you THINK they should! If your solution doesn't work as advertised, you need to abandon it and revoke its implementation, something that few people will do because they're all so damn proud, they can never admit defeat, no matter how mistaken they were! :(

If you don't like it, do what I do - stop reading the thread.

The best rule of thumb, is to quit EVERY thread after the first dozen posts, as the subject quickly gets lost and everyone starts arguing over the minor details. If you haven't learned anything within a dozen posts, you never will!

This means that casual readers shouldn't ever read beyond that limit, as the additional post will ALL be written by us pedantic authors arguing obscure details that no one, besides us, gives a shit about!

Now, which authors want to argue with me about that? 'D

I'll argue with you about that. Some of the best discussions in a thread occur much later than 12 posts in the thread.

I vaguely remember a 'scientist' claiming that if you hadn't met your optimum life partner within the first 13 candidates, then you almost certainly never would because every subsequent candidate would be inferior to one you'd already rejected.

I was struck by the similarity between 12 and 13.

Maybe the best discussions, but those tend to devolve into specifics which aren't as interesting to casual readers. But if you want to avoid the arguments and obsession with the obscure details of language, then it's best to get in and out quickly, to avoid the quagmire.

When someone makes a mistake that opens the door to humor it doesn't mean those making the jokes are looking to abuse or humiliate the person, it just means they're taking the opportunity to have some fun.

As to moderation, there is a form of communal moderation in any member of the forum can hit the thumbs down button to report a post to the webmaster for their review, and it will be looked at.

Personally, I believe the spelling and grammar police should give serious consideration to exercising self-procreation when they jump on someone like that. On the other hand, it's a bit much to be ratting them out in an attempt to silence the peanut gallery.

The OP author in that thread could either fix the error, simply ignore the negative comments, or return fire. There appears to be an epidemic of butthurt in play.

Writing "masterbate" for "masturbate" is a common mistake. So common I believe it was all in fun.

As to thread drift, I don't think I've ever read one to the end that I hadn't started. I very often utilize the green dot. And even when it's mine, if it drifted I briefly skim those posts that don't have my name in it.

It's one of the most fun threads I read. And that's all it is: fun. It has nothing to do with bashing the OP, it was a common typo. Sometimes just one remark triggers another and that's all that happened.

I agree. Everyone makes spelling and grammatical mistakes in their forum postings and if they were all critiqued, probably less than 10% of all forum posts would further the discussion.

However a mistake like masterbate is a licence for the site's punsters to dive in.

Straight lines like that are, indeed, masterbait for the forums various wordsmiths.

"What are you doing on the forum so long every day?"

"Oh, nothing, I've just been masterbaiting everyone." 'D

That was my main point with the twelve posts. Generally, if someone requests help, it'll be answered immediately, while the protracted debates following it really don't relate to the initial discussion, but to some esoteric details about language or phrasing.

In Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens named a character Charles Bates who was called Master. Hence Master Bates.

btw, I did a search on this forum's search, searching on "masterbate" to find the original thread. I guess the search doesn't work very good. It found 2 occurrences. One from 2016 and one from March of 2018. Not this one or the one I was looking for.

Try a search again with "masterbating" as that was the term in the original post.
