503 Errors

Marc Nobbs ๐Ÿšซ

Is anyone else still getting intermittent '503' errors when accessing the site?

I didn't used to get them at all, but now it seems to be a few times a day. A minor irritation more than anything else, because you just wait a few mins and refresh and it loads, but still...

Is it just that the site is currently too popular for its own good?

l am getting 503 error messages also. Usually after I have logged into SOL.

Refreshing works sometimes. When it persists, I exit SOL and then log back in. That usually fixes the problem.

I don't know if a VPN is an option for you, but using OVPN with a Swedish exit node and a chromium-based browser (Arc, in my case), I have had zero problems.

It is imperative that you disable javascript blocking for SOL, and likely ad blocking as well. Lazeez does not display adds or use trackers, and javascript is required for the site to function properly (and for CloudFlare to show you captchas).

I'm still getting them occasionally on SOL, but they are clearing faster - refresh after 5 seconds instead of 5 + minutes. Still no issues on SciFi or FS (SR).
One thing I have just noticed - the static.cloudflare js injection just before the /body tag has gone. This was previously blocked by uBlock.

Got dozens of 'em last night while trying to read "A Fresh Start".

I strongly suspect that this is due to browser "fingerprinting".

That is one of the symptoms. If you have any adblockers or script blockers, you might try turning them off.

This isn't limited to SOL.
I've had the same problems with FlightRadar24, and even with Walmart's on-line ordering.

Somebody done broke the internets.

It is going wider, now I am getting 503-errors on the Dennys rewards site. It is also, as of today, on CloudFlare.

I've only seen 503's today here at SOL with Firefox, but Chromium is working fine.

Is this still a cloudflare issue? Is there no viable alternative?

edit - spoke too soon, now getting 503's from Chromium as well. No vpn.

I'm getting them too. The interesting thing is if I turn my VPN (ExpressVPN) off the problem goes away. And I tried a couple of different exit locations with the same results. [I don't need to use a VPN with SOL, but I usually just leave it on all the time.(If it helps I was using a Dallas exit point, but before that a Chicago one as well)]

Using the latest version of Firefox on a fully updated Win 11.

Never used a VPN. 99+% of my time I am on my home computer with a router/firewall separate from my modem. I have never bothered with it on my tablet connecting over a cell phone network. I only use Wi-Fi at home. Of course, I don't do anything on the tablet except read SoL.

It is getting even wider. Red Robin restaurants went to CloudFlare and started serving up 503 errors. That's 2 new ones today.

Are they getting more business than they can handle?

I believe it's (at least in part) their 'top secret' bot detection that is failing miserably unless you use very specific browsers with very limited extensions.

Javascript basically needs to be turned on globally, and your browser details (e.g. 'agent' data) need to match ones that CloudFlare do not think are a bot.

They won't tell you what those are (people have asked). This is about the best you'll get:
