Parents dote on daughter and ignore son. When he leaves for college he gets an apartment. When daughter leaves in turn, parents demand him to share the apartment with her. At first he ignores her but then she tells him she always loved him.

Does it ring any bells? TIA

There is a shorter story that I can't find right now about a son who is basically ignored by his parents. His mother is all about his older brother, and his father is just plain aloof.
He moves out into hos own apartment and is working on designing a multi-processor computer (obviously the story is a few years old.) Interacts with a classmate whose parents are very controlling due to a rape in her past. She helps him design and build the computer. They sell the rights to the computer for several million. They decide to get married and go to tell his parents. His sister says they didn't know where he gat gone to, and he tells her that her parents have always known where he was.

His sisters and female cousins get cars at 16. He and his male cousins don't. Other things happen that lead to his uncles divorcing their wives and his male cousins disappearing after they graduate high school.
