Lost Story SciFi

grandad_rufus ๐Ÿšซ

All I really remember are some fragments of the start of the story :-

A teen / young man is exploring some caves on the property he owns / lives on. He comes across an alien ship with an AI, then goes on to acquire a crew. There may have been aliens in stasis pods etc.

This is NOT Monblade's Destroyers

Anyone help ?

Are you sure about the age? Here's one where the MC is middle aged.

I think this is the one, not quite as I remember it but close enough to be the one. Thank you.

A long shot. Zoras' Giants in the Sandbox has a crippled vet living in a desert valley that a damaged space ship hides in.

Sir Winston's Star Dancer?

There's another I remember involved a archaeology dig where (IIRC) the young(ish) guy who owned/had a mining claim on the property (can't remember for sure) was involved in the dig (strained disbelief, but meh) and found alien spaceship. Set in the northwest.

Yeah, he decided to get into a DSW with Lazeez and lost. Pulled his stories.
I think they're still on Eric Storm's sight.

Not on SOL ?

He's the reason for the anti switch and bait rules as he was posting partial stories and telling people to go to his website to pay a membership to get the rest of it. His books are now available via Amazon and his own website.

The old Forum was at https://groups.google.com/g/storiesonline? I looked there but searches on Winston or on teaser did not throw up anything definitive.

I looked there but searches on Winston or on teaser did not throw up anything definitive.

It came up a few times due to people searching for his stories by name and the story as to why they left SoL were detailed. Also, the author's spouse weighed in on the discussion as did many others, including Lazeez who gave the details of the problems he had with the Sir Winston.

Yes, he only posted teasers to SOL. I kicked him out.

Maybe. Very possible. It's been so many years I don't remember.

He changed his name on the site a couple of times. At the time another author who worked with him asked me to delete his stories in protest.

I think it was "If I use as a name a less-than-common name which appeared in a copyrighted work, how long will I be eating nothing but ramen while paying my defense attorney and the judgement against me?"

@Crumbly Writer

Questions like: How long is copyright good for? or, more likely, How the hell do I keep from being exposed as a huge fraud?

Complex question, really.

Copyright now lasts for the life of the author, plus 70 years.

Also, you can not "Copyright" a name. That is, an actual birth name. However, when it comes to a pen name, it gets more complex. If it is say "Dracula", then there is no copyright. 2 or 5 or 20 authors can all use it, and nobody can really argue about it.

Same if you pick a "common name", like Jim Smith or Mike Hunt. Somebody could claim "Copyright Infringement" in that you are trying to confuse readers if you both write similar types of work. But that can get tricky as they have to prove you are intending to sell your stories to people confusing you with another author. And if one writes romance and the other sports stories, then it would likely fail as they are very different works.

If you are writing under a name preserved by copyright (Darth Maul, Harry Potter, Harry Callahan, Franklin W. Dixon, etc) then unless that is the name on your birth certificate they can go after you for using a trademarked name fictitiously. And once again, in that your doing so violates the example I gave above.

But if your actual birth name is "Stephen King", go ahead. He can't sue you, although you may have a hard time getting into print unless you change your name a bit. Because publishers may be afraid of the hassle and cost of deep pockets.

Such is not unusual at all, and for example the Screen Actors Guild actually has rules in place to keep that from happening. I think that if a person has a name enrolled, they have exclusive use for something like their life plus 50 years.

That is why we have Michael Keaton, Michael Douglas, and Mike Douglas. All three were born Michael Douglas, but each took a different name for professional reasons. I knew a guy in SAG who went by "Bill Collins", because his birth first name was Phil. And Phil Collins was already a member of SAG for his movie work.

He then later changed it to something unrelated, as when the Screen Extra's Guild collapsed and the members brought into SAG, there were suddenly around 15 "Bill Collins" grandfathered in. Unlike SAG, SEG never required an individual be the only one to use a name.

Just a side note, the chapters for Star Dancer is different from his published work. This is little "cleaner" than the published work. He changed the character a bit. I read this version first. When I read the book, it was confusing due to some changes that he never flashed out completely.

Did he ever finish the story? Or are there still books to come?

I remember way-way back on EWP that there were a couple of authors writing semi-similar scifi stories that I was following at the time:
New Talos - Sir Winston
Eutharan - Siath
New Federation - Monbade
Progenitors - Medico (Passed away before he could complete it)

I've read the first 2 books, not really worth your money in my opinion. And the price per book goes up for each subsequent book in the series, never understood that. It just means I will never complete the series.

I've read the destoyers books of Monbade and in my humble opinion much better. Hope to see you finish them Mon!
Never heard of the other 2 authors before.

@grandad_rufus

I vaguely recall a story where a teen was in a cave and the floor gave way. The AI on a space ship sent a cart to bring him to ship before he died.

I think he went on to captain the ship and crew it with his sister and friends but I'm not positive of that. Don't really remember much else; just that I did enjoy it.

Don't know if that is much help but it does seem to meet the requirements of the search.

That is from Monbade, book 1 of The New Federation Series.

@Keet

That is indeed the story I was trying to recall. Thank you, I can't wait to see if it's as good as I remember it being.

Do feel a bit of a moron as grandad_rufus specified that was not the story he wanted. My only defense is that my mind was to busy trying to remember the story to actually check the one he mentioned.

Anyway, thanks again. Now I'm off to read The Destroyers.
