NanoTech not cmsix

oxen589 ๐Ÿšซ

An older story. May not be on SOL. From memory the MC was young and wakes/becomes aware he has something in his head. Begins programming/changing commands. Can't remember more than that.

Thanks for everyone's time in advance.

I think you'll need more of a description than that.

'Island Mine' by Refusenik has elements in common and is an excellent story.

There's a story that needed a follow up story if one ever did.

I've also wondered how many people here know what "Refusenik" means?

@Remus2

what "Refusenik" means?

"Refusenik | Definition of Refusenik by Merriam-Webster
1 : a Soviet citizen and especially a Jew refused permission to emigrate.
2 : a person who refuses or declines something."

Never looked up the definition of that word, but I assumed it was used much like Peacenik was, in that it was someone who clung to an action (beleif, philosphy etc) without regard to facts or situations... i.e Peace at all costs.

I just assumed Refusenik was a nay-sayer by rote. A Negative Nelly, if you will.

@Reluctant_Sir

a nay-sayer

Probably "nyet" rather than "nay". Horses neigh, People who speak Russian don't. Germans use the number before ten. They spell it a little different.

What? You have a problem with Seven of Nein? :)

I second that emotion. In fact, I started a thread on that very topic. But I've come to realize that while I can see another story there, or rather where I'd want it to go, Refusenik may not agree.

Since it's his creation, I'd be hesitant to even read someone else's follow up. Much of the appeal of that story was Refusenik's style. So the enjoyment of the Human Phoenix pair was not surprising.

All we fans can only hope is that Refusenik develops an inspiration to continue. Even if it wasn't a sequel to Island Mine, I'd still enjoy something new from him (her?).

I agree Island Mine is agreat story but a bit young for the one I am thinking of. The story I'm thinking of I read maybe 20 years ago. I think it was pre SOL but not certain on that. It may have been the first NanoTech story I read. Because my memory is so vague it is more of a hope that it twigged someone's grey matter.

There was a story way back when about a meteorite coming through the glass in boy's bedroom window while he slept that was the same type of alien like in 'Island Mine'. I think it had Phoenix in the title, but am not totally sure.

In my limited comprehension, a sequel to 'Island Mine' would almost have to revolve around the interaction between the established inhabitants of Mars - Waylon, et.al., and the new visitors/colonists from Earth. If the newcomers are via Musk there will probably be fewer problems than if they are from one or more governments/other corporations that are used to throwing their weight around and getting what they want, to hell with anyone else.

Since any such confrontation will probably be at least ten years after the end of 'Island Mine', I would not be surprised to find out that Waylon had made one or more clandestine trips back to Earth with the goal of finding other humans to join his colony. But I am not by any stretch of the imagination a writer, so this is all just meanderings of my limited imagination.

It would only need to have a solution like in the Watchmen sequel that just finished up on HBO. Just have the AI construct robots that would wander around the surface of Free Vallis, including one that looks like Waylon doing whatever it is that the story wants him to do (build buildings, vehicles, etc.).

Waylon would then be free to return to Earth and accomplish whatever it is that the story wants him to.
