Magical / Occult detective

grandad_rufus ๐Ÿšซ

There are two stories ( or two series rather ), that were either here or on the sister sites ( finestories / Scifi ).

#1 Set in an alternate US. I believe the MC had a nickname of Tempest and he had a rep of destroying large areas. He is from Texas and at one point saves a team from Mexico and escapes on a hovercraft of some kind.

#2 This is (I believe) set in Britain. Starts of with the MC telling a story of how he did magic tricks and escaped from real magic handcuffs (father was a police officer). lots of short stories, one was a spy for the King of Norway being chased on a train. Another was set in Egypt at an archaeological dig. I remember one involving blackmail ?

Help me Obi Wan (please ?)

@grandad_rufus

I think #1 is the Art Deco series by Stultus - a writer who loves his exclamation marks!

#1 is not the Art Deco series, unless some of the details are totally wrong.

- alternate US: check
- a nickname of Tempest: no.
- a rep of destroying large areas: kind of
- he is from Texas: check
- saves a team from Mexico: no, a team from DC (?)
- escapes on a hovercraft of some kind: that fits

The team were in Mexico when they escape.

Could have sworn they were in Deseret and not Mexico

@Obliterous

Deseret is correct. It may be the sacrificial pyramid which caused the confusion.

Thank you kindly, it certainly is that one !

Updated:

If you don't mind buying your books, dead tree press also has tales of magic using gum shoes. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files is a long series about a Chicago PI who is also a wizard. That combination of talents sometimes makes him the connection between mundane law enforcement and the crimes of the undead.

Harry Dresden is a flawed character with an insane fairy god mother that wants to collect him from the physical world for his own good. A side effect of being a magic user is advanced entropy for his mundane tools. His car is always falling apart. Being an independent agent, he clashes with the magic users own 'law enforcement' in the form of the Wizards Council. Like any bureaucracy, its less interested in justice and more interested in control. This creates plenty of possibilities for conflict.

Also try Orlando Sanchez and Shayne Silvers for similar series.

Thanks. I've added them to my list.

Indeed it was - I really need to re-read them soon
