I remember a single scene from an SOL story and cannot remember the name of the story or the author.
In the story, a young student (middle school or high school, don't remember gender) visits a college campus and sits in on a math class, and corrects something the professor put on a board.

this could be Ernest Bywater's Odd Man in College. As a pre freshman looking at he professors' teaching styles he solves a physics challenge equation from Stephen Hawking, and identifies a transcription error.

Sounds like one of the Bec stories where she is sitting with her brother and points out to the Tutor that the formula he has just written on the board looks wrong because the pattern of the symbols isn't correct between a couple of the squiggles (it's a calculus formula).

Thanks everyone. It was the Bec story that I remembered. the Ernest Bywater story may be a perfect match, but it's not the one I had in mind because I haven't read it — yet. I'll start correcting that mistake today.
