There was a story I remember that had the main middle school aged protagonist develop some sort of nightly soundtrack that gave him more confidence, or something of the nature. Any ideas?

I can't pinpoint the name bit isn't that story about a guy building a harem with the help of subliminal messages on tapes?
I did a category search using "Hypnosis" and "Harem". Could it be:
Listening to Jack by Mister Arioch (inactive since 2013)

another piece of the story I think is in the text (if we are indeed talking about the same story) his first "tape" was made on a Cat Stevens album for his friend
I may be wrong but I think the story is named "The Experiment" however I can't find it here so either the author took it off or it was posted somewhere else
and sorry I can't remember the name of the author

Side question: Is "mental bolstering" when you brace your head with two-by-fours, or when you stable fabric and cushions to your brain?

Nah, it's when you lean forward, put your elbows on the desk, and lay your head in your hands while saying something like, "Why me, Lord, why me?"
"Why me, Lord, why me?"
Sometimes those expressions make good story titles as Cmsix used a variation of that line for one of his. At least it does not have the incomplete flag.

I this it's when you tear off a cushion from the couch and hit somebody over the head repeatedly, while shouting "think for once!"
