Investigator/Trouble shooter who uses magic and science to solve crimes. Several fairly short stories in series. May be spinoff from dead tree book same as Gina Marie Wylie's Lord Kalvan stories. I think George Washington had possibly become Duke or Earl of North America in the past.
Bruce Bretthauer wrote some stories which match some of those requirements (no magic, no Earl Washington) but they are on GMW's site.
He may even have put them on Amazon, I can't remember.
