SOL used to make communicating via email fairly simply, but the new SOL 'messaging' killed that capability. While you can opt to have your SOL messages displayed via email, any 'return messages' will be forever lost, as there's no one tracking incoming messages to the automated system.
Basically, if a commenter doesn't want to be identified, there's nothing you can do, which is why so many suggested inviting them to register their objections with a story via email, so authors can discuss it. However, as expected, this frequently doesn't accomplish much.
It's similar to most media outlets nowadays, which allow users to heap abuse on others with virtually no safeguards other than the 'we're monitoring the abuse', which typically goes nowhere at all. They choose to shelter abusers, to stir up debate, rather than protect their core users.

Nope. As Lazeez said in another thread, he provided a basic means of communicating with each other. He never intended the messaging system to be a complete email system.

Attachements are not supported by the messaging system. Our current messages database (1 year of messages) contains nearly 300,000 messages and it's about 1.5GB.
Since SOL (and our other sites) aren't in the messaging business, then we can't dedicate much resources to messages. So attachments will never be supported.

To accomplish what you need, you should exchange your email address with the person you want to send the attachment to, and use off-site email to do your editing business.
My editor and I make use of a shared Dropbox folder as a way to pass files back and forth; it's worked very well for us.

I used to do that, but now we use Sync.com which is fully encrypted end-to-end. DropBox can read/scan your files (and does, and can and will report you to the authorities if they think you are breaking the law).
If you pre-encrypt files, then DropBox is safe; otherwise it is not.
I will look into Sync.
The sync is where most people leave their dirty dishes, so take care with it.
