How to Indicate Laughter Without Using the word "Laugh?"

PotomacBob 🚫

How do you indicate laughter without using the word "laugh"? I'm looking for the phonetic spelling of the actual sounds people use when laughing. I've seen it rendered "Ha, ha, ha," but, to me, that is not a very close approximation of how people sound when they laugh.
I tried to figure out a way to search for it, but soon figured out I had to know how to spell it before I searched.
Anyone?

It might not replicate the exact sound of laughter but it is easily recognisable. Using a less well known replacement might well add confusion and thus destroy the humour.

1 Not everyone's laugh sounds the same. Personally, I tend to he he he rather than ha ha ha
2. Unless someone is sarcastically fake/slow laughing, I would do it without the commas. The commas imply a significant pause between the laughs.

I searched on 'onomatopoeia words'. Some lists are better than others

You can always give every unique character their own laugh:

Zeehahahahaha!
Yohohohohoho!
Derishishishishi!
Goldigadigadigadiga!

Though, I think that only works for One Piece.

Generally, I use: I laughed, she laughed, or they laughed. And if I need to change the pitch there's chuckled, giggled, chortled, snorted, guffawed, cackled, without even getting into the sarcastically laughed, maniacally laughed, false-laughed, etc.

Though I do use '"Heh," she speech-tagged' for low energy tired laughing. I've used "Ha!" for exclamations of sarcasm but hahaha? not so much.

As a reader this gives me a good idea of the type of laughter without confusing me by having to interpret hahaha or hehehe.

Also, wouldn't dom laughter be higher pitched?? After all, when you listen to it through speakers, nothing comes out of the subs... :)

Mostly likely he is a sub as Mrs Claus is a Domme, who only lets Santa cum once a year...

Of course he's a Dom. He's such a top, he's at the very top of the world.

Uh, Dom's have no say someone's being a 'top' or a 'bottom', as that's a personal preference. Any Dom who insists on violating a Sub's kinks, is likely to lose them as a Sub.

If Santa Claus is Adom, was he tempted by Christmas Eve's apple?

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is December 24th. Since Adam came before Eve, Christmas Adam is December 23rd.

Since Adam came first, Eve probably ended up having to diddle herself.

Christmas Eve cums twice - the whole of December 24th and the evening of December 25th.

More precisely, he's awfully tempted by that nice 16-inch MacBook Pro that Eve just received from her boyfriend, who's not a Dom, by the way!

Now that makes perfect sense. Especially the bit that followed whereby Adam and Eve knew shame when they became PC and wore leaves, which died soon after installing thus requiring constant updates, not to mention bug fixes...

So is teehee transexual..?

And is teepee a result of jubilant watersports or a more 'in tents' humour..?

And don't forget the expulsion through the nostrils of the beverage of the character's choice.

A former work colleague had a laugh that sounded like a rusty chainsaw.

Generally, the whole 'Show, Don't Tell' movement revolves around authors showing what's physically happening, rather than having to state what someone is doing.

Thus, you shouldn't try to duplicate the explicit sounds, unless you've got your own sound studio and are willing to create a film. However, you can describe someone slapping their knee, falling off their chair, or chortling incessantly. It's often the physical actions that conveys what mere words cannot, and that's the entire basic of the 'Show Don't Tell' movement (otherwise known as 'writing').

Generally, the whole 'Show, Don't Tell' movement revolves around authors showing what's physically happening, rather than having to state what someone is doing.

I recently read a description of showing that I wish I had kept since it's one of the hardest things to define. It had something to do with living the story through the character.

So if you tell the reader the father is abusive, the reader isn't feeling it. But if you show the father being abusive (by his actions and dialogue) to his daughter (belittling her in front of her friends, beating her, locking her in a closet, etc.), the reader feels his abusiveness through the daughter. The author doesn't have to tell the reader he's abusive. The reader feels the daughter's pain. The reader is living the abusiveness through the daughter.
