As usual in these cases, I wonder how serious it is (i.e. is he likely to recover in time, or more likely to worsen with time)?

It's bad enough when an author chooses not to finish a story, but it's sad when they're unable to finish it despite knowing where the story goes and willing to invest the time if they only could.

@greensocks

It seems to me that if an author has health issues and knows it will impact their future efforts, the best way to notify readers and fellow authors would be a short, appropriately worded Blog post.

Or better yet, for anyone who's too ill to type much (hint, hint, all the rest of us currently healthy authors), reach out to another author to convey the message for you, either here on SOL or on your own blog/website.

It takes less effort to list a diagnosis and expected recovery than it does to finely craft a well-phrased reply.

True, but most of us are never told about the author's problem. Not requesting it, but some form of "Sick/Invalid List" would let us stay in touch with each other. Authors who are temporarily or permanently dropping out of the SOL community (or in the case of a death a surviving family member) could post that fact to the list so we would all know why they aren't around any longer.

I'll tell you what, if I get struck by a bus (or am kidnapped by the secret police) while traveling in a foreign country, I'll assign you to inform everyone for me. I'll do the same for you. Of course, if you fall into a fit of depression and despair, you may return to a abundance of death notices. :( (Tee-hee!)

Oh God! A fate too horrible to contemplate.

Sorry to hear about Phil, I was truly enjoying 'Second Time Through' I hope he can produce more work, but more importantly I just hope that he is still around to read both the New and the Updates. BUICK GS

That's got to be bittersweet, though. While you, as an author, want to see the work finished before it's too late, you hate seeing someone else taking over your work, substituting their own words for your thoughts.

Just got a note from Phil. He is feeling better.

He is in Alaska and sent an awesome video of whales frolicking.

It sounds as though he's having a great time and the old Reaper might have missed his chance.

I thought I would share the news with his SOL family.

Just a thought for authors suffering illness. If you are up to it have you ever considered taping a story and asking another author to post it on your behalf?

Sometimes even that might not help if the illness or the drugs used to try to control it affect how well a person can concentrate.

I've known a couple of authors who've 'disappeared' simply chose to write under a new pseudonym, because they thought their newer work wouldn't reflect well on their earlier, more polished stories. However, each subsequently died from the illnesses plaguing them at the time. :(

Moral: You can't assumed an non-visible author has died, but if they've been ill, the odds aren't terribly good.
