Top Downloads vs Most Popular

Marc Nobbs 🚫

Genuine Question. On the home page, under 'Ongoing Serials", there are two options that, to me, should be the same, but aren't.

So what is the difference between "Top Downloads" and "Most Popular"? On the "Most Popular" page, it says, "Stories appearing in this list are Serials (in progress or completed) updated in the last 30 days, sorted by popularity (most readers)"

How is that different to the stories that have been downloaded the most? Surely the stories with the most downloads are getting the most readers and are the most popular?

There are currently three stories on the "Most Popular" page, none of which are on the "Top Downloads" page. So what makes them the most popular when there are at least 50 stories with more downloads?

One is the last 10 days, the other the last 30.

But I don't get why there are only three stories on the the Most Popular page. Does it exclude stories on the Top Downloads page?

Wow. It's been broken for years and I had no idea.

From the stories that were in the list, the function has been broken since 2017 or 2018.

Fixed.

The difference between the two lists is that the Most Popular serials are calculated by dividing the number of downloads by the number of installments that the serial has.

For example, serial A was posted in one shot and has a download count of 10,000, that means its installment count is 1, so 10,000/1 is 10,000, so it's popularity score is 10,000.

Serial B is ongoing. Has 100,000 downloads, but is being posted at the rate of 2 chapters every 5 days, and it has 100 chapters. That means its installment count is 50. 100,000/50 = 2,000, (roughly the number of readers).

Serial A would rank above serial B.

In that case, glad I asked. And happy to see it fixed.

That explanation makes perfect sense. Thanks.

And thanks to you, Mr. Nobbs. Like a lot of us, I just thought it was working as Lazeez intended. As the post-9-11 mantra goes: see something, say something.

On a serious note, it does imply that it's not a site function that many site users pay much attention to. Or use...

In my opinion, Most Popular is a function of the ratings assigned to the story by the readers. There are factors affecting the ratings such as story reviews that recommend the reading the story and personal taste in content.

Most Top Downloads is probably related number of downloads the story has.

One of the differences that I have noticed is just because you read the story doesn't mean you liked the content. Therefore, if the reader loads the story for a short time, exits it and later downloads the last read chapter. That explains a high download count, if numerous readers and doing the same thing. If the story isn't given a high rating for any reason that would explain a lower popularity score.
