Libre office successor?

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

I upgraded the system on my Mac, and Libre Office is no longer compatible. (In fact, theinstallation of the new system de-installed Libre Office and it took me a while to figure out that even the application was gone.
Anybody have suggestions about a successor to Libre OFfice?

I use MS Word on my Mac, but is Open Office still around?

Open Office BECAME Libre Office, IIRC.

Nope. It is part of Apache now. Still free.

Libre Office CAME FROM Open Office.

Maybe you just need to reinstall it. I went to their site and clicked on Download โ€” https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download-libreoffice/

Under "choose your operating system" it has both "macOS (Apple Silicon)" and "macOS (Apple Intel.)

How out of date is the OS on your computer?

My system is the newest one available for my computer. Libre Office worked fine on the previous system. It was updating to the new system that made it incompatible.

I wasn't accusing you of anything, I was suggesting possible options IF it was an older story.

If it wasn't, or you don't have any of those options, then you're right back where you were. I can't work magic and make it just magically appear again.

As always, sorry for offering advice. You'd think I'd have learned by now, yet you keep bitching anytime you can't figure something out, so I stupidly suggest what little I can. Guess that's part of my forgiving nature.

Did you by any chance install Mac OS 26?

I'm running Libre Office on two computers I bought less than a year ago, with no trouble on Mac OS 15.6 (Sequoia)

You might try a clean install of the Apple Silicon version (make sure that's the one you choose (not the Intel version).

The other option is to install it via Homebrew, which is what I do.

I hate to say it, but for outdated system, you'll have to take your system offline anytime you want to use it (I've done this before). But, you save a backup of your executable first, so when you forget (it's inevitable), you can then simply copy it back into the executables library.

Either way, if you ever keep an older executable around, you also keep a copy of your version's installation procedure (your system doesn't need to be online to perform an installation). However, that's a common gotcha, since many are reluctant to upgrade to unproven, untested versions, they instead resort to forced uninstalls to force you to upgrade to the latest crappy upgrade, as they don't make any money if folks don't fork over money for continual upgrades.

(I also have a couple 'lifetime' upgrades, which vanish if I ever upgrade!). And having spent my life doing extensive upgrade testing to uncover bugs, I'll never trust brain-dead AI to exclusively program upgrades (it just don't work)).

That sounds like a wrong version of LO. Can't you just say which MacOS you're using? New main versions of LO often exclude OS versions older than 4 years.
BTW: LO offers older main versions for older operating systems.
Of course, you already have Pages for text (able to open and export .docx files), Keynote for presentations (superior to PP and LO), and a decent spread sheet app with Numbers. Bean is a free, very slim text processor for Mac and can also handle docx. I am only using LO for really large and involved spreadsheet operations.

I avoid Google like the plague, with the exception of YouTube. Their TOS basically gives them permission to scan all your documents for 'objectionable' content, which isn't clearly defined. Not to mention using it to build a profile of you.

And then they probably then use it for training their AI.

Anything published is used for training as well. Nothing is safe nowadays.

In fact, there are reports that say that within 20 minutes or so of connecting to the internet your data and privacy is probably compromised.

Unless you don't use the internet and live off grid it's impossible to ensure you are not tracked. Even a single online purchase makes you compromised. The payment gateways keep track of you even after a single payment forever.
