A**ehole Commentors

KimLittle ๐Ÿšซ

I have noticed over the last week or so a few commentors who are bombing a number of stories with appallingly rude comments, to which the logical response (and some authors have engaged as such) is a dismissive 'Why have you kept reading then?'.

Were these people not loved as children? Were they the invisible middle child? And I'm watching at least two of these tools try to pick fights with prolific and well-reviewed/rated writers on this site. Would be nice if you could, reddit-style, see all of a commenters comments across the site.

I just hit the little button that Laz gave us that blocks that particular commenter from access to my stories. If he was especially egregious, I'd delete the comment. At least with the block, he has to go make another fake log-in to make nasty comments.

Some people think they're the sort who want to see the world burn, but the most they can actually achieve is to make idiots of themselves in public.

Please note I am not disparaging all of those who make idiots of themselves in public. I'm related to some of them. Hell, I am some of them.

Hell, I am some of them.

If you are some of them does that mean you are more than one of them?

Were these people not loved as children? Were they the invisible middle child?

Maybe. But I think there is a more fundamental reason.

That reason does not require belittling their IQ or blaming their behaviour on their circumstances, childhood, wealth, opportunities or education. It is both far more accurate and impossible for them to deny.

The reason is that at some past point in their lives, they had a moment of absolute clarity in which they saw themselves not as others see them, or how they like to see themselves, but as they actually are. And no matter how hard they try, they can't unsee that image. The image's truth terrifies them to such an extent that they lash out blindly in repeatedly pointless efforts to erase the truth that they are worthless to humanity.

Kim, take a lesson from the two best known critics of all time, Siskel and Ebert. Eventually, all critics die. Hopefully, we'll still be around to not mourn them!

Problem I see here, how to become aware of their death?

Where are these comments?

I've seen three so far, from the same person. One was in the comments for Al Steiner's Intemperance Book 5, one was in my A True History Book 5, and one was in Emmeran's A Ten Pound Bag, which just concluded. There may be others, I'm not specifically looking for them, these are just in stories that I read.

Not being a writer on this site I guess I don't get to see these comments as the only place for comments is this forum.

Pretty sure everyone can see the comments posted to stories, unless the author has hidden them.

Edit: Or disallowed commenting.

ystokes ๐Ÿšซ

@KimLittle

can someone post a link where these comments are.

I don't have a link for the stories mentioned in this thread

Nope no comment link. This is what I see at the end of the last chapter. The "Share with others" is not a link.

This is just a copy and paste and not the format of the Reader Comments area. I tried getting a print screen but couldn't..got a screenshot now but can't pm it to you or insert it here

Nope no comment link.

You may have disabled the comments system in your story display style.

In the story display style editor there is a check box labelled 'Show Reader Comments'. If it's unchecked, then you don't see the comments at the end of stories.

People bash stories (which I suspect they often haven't even read) simply because they can hide in Mom's basement and post comments without any risk of getting punched in the mouth. Makes them feel a tiny bit of power, when in reality they have none.

I think a lot of it is that they only want to read stories that are exactly as they want them. And I have had many like that over the years.

One got mad when I did not turn it into an incest story. In another it was because I was trying an experiment in writing a story with no dialogue, and I laughed when they comments I can't do dialogue as there was little in the story. When in fact there was none, I wanted to try a story that was all internal narration and it was done on purpose.

More than a few even because the story had a "bad ending". Even though they were part of a series I called "Dark Tales" and warned them they were not fairytale type stories.

Some simply love to attack anything that does not tickle all the kink buttons they want pressed. And I have yet to see a comment like that from another author in here that actually contributes something to the site I generally pay them little mind to be honest.

As far as I am concerned, they can know themselves. In the biblical sense.

I think a lot of it is that they only want to read stories that are exactly as they want them.

This isn't just a problem with 'asshole commentators' on SoL. This is a systemic and extremely longstanding problem. The 'asshole commentators' are just blunt and crude about it in such a way as to be easily dismissed.

I can't tell you how many movie reviews I've read that boil down to: 'Here's how the movie should have gone, and if it had gone this way it would've been a masterpiece, therefore this movie is garbage because it didn't go that way.'

The problem is that what the creator(s) created and what we can view is what they created. Is it fun? Is it perhaps also a masterpiece? Who can tell, when that's the review?

Usually, of course, they're far less blunt, and you have to read the whole review to realize that the pull quote 'The film-maker missed the mark significantly, rendering this just a bore. 2/5 stars' means 'The film-maker missed my incredibly brilliant idea and substituted their own vision, and I stopped paying attention once I realized they weren't going to do what I wanted.'

There are all sorts of bad commentators. In retrospect, I got most of them over and done with in the first 40 chapters or so, and most of the rest in a book or two. That's not much help to anyone writing shorter works, though.

My answer is always 'Sorry the story didn't go the way you wanted. I can't write it for everyone, and I'm telling it the way I intend to. By all means, go find a story you love. Life's too short to spend reading things you don't like.'

Or they're your answer:

I think a lot of it is that they only want to read stories that are exactly as they want them

As various pairs of my characters have been observed to say:
"Fuck 'em!"
"Or, better, don't!"

I think you are correct, and that is tragic.

From having read your stories, I am fairly certain that we disagree on a bit, are at variance on quite a bit, and are in relative agreement on most vital things.

Thus not only do I enjoy your stories. Quite often aspects of them challenge me! Get me to consider different perspectives, and occasionally change my mind.

I have been through more than a few "crucibles" and thankfully had a good base from my youth to provide me a framework and core of values and beliefs. I have changed less than some, but mostly because I had much tested just before I turned 13/ From 13 to 19 I faced significant challenges, including further death in my family, and going to war.

My metal has been tempered. Yet, through my life I have continued to engage with people who challenge my beliefs and perspectives in a healthy way. Mostly people whom I respect, so I consider their perspectives as worthy, if not mine.

In one of your most recent chapters, one of your characters made an "internal comment" that has me thinking, and re-thinking a matter quite a bit. I have not resolved the matter, and likely won't for some time.

Mostly I read your story for entertainment. That it gets me thinking, often, is a Huge Bonus!

KimLittle ๐Ÿšซ

@KimLittle

Just seen a swathe of end-of-story comments from a familiar voice (repeating the same comments they made a few weeks back), but with a different username.

Not sure if this is the same commenter who just changed their display name, or if they get just have multiple accounts.

Either way, what's the digital equivalent of giving them some warm Ribena and a colouring book?
