So I've got the prologue finished. Just need to go ovver it once to edit it and change some things but I'd like a little feed back. So here is the unedited, raw writing of the prologue, it's about a page and a half in Word 365.
So, yeah. I’m dead. But before we get into that let’s back up a bit. My name was John Doe, yeah, I know what you are thinking but it really was my name. I was an IT professional in the United States, 95% of the time I worked from home, but that 5% I had to go into the office, either for the yearly mandatory company wide meeting or something so fucked up it required hands on and in person attention. When I wasn’t at work, I was a gamer, anime-fan, and lover to my wife, names aren’t important now.
One day on my way to the bus coming back from one of those times I had to be in the office I got struck and killed by a vehicle, I later learned the vehicle was named Truck-kun. A Japanese vehicle auto-pilot program that grew sentience not too long before I was killed. I mean we were overdue for Skynet to happen right? What do you mean by “I later learned”? Oh well I was told about it in my post life debrief.
Turns out our ‘souls’ as some put it is just energy that leaves the body when the body can’t sustain it any longer. When the body dies, the energy is returned to a grid of sorts and repackaged as someone else. I, however, got chosen for QC, Quality Control.
“Ok, Mr. Doe? Right this way.” A voice called and I just floated(?) to a room, I couldn’t feel or see, I just sensed.
“Wait. Where am I? What is this place?” I could only think.
“You are at the RIPQC headquarters.” The voice spoke again. “The Rest in Peace Quality Control. You’ve been chosen to conduct a survey of your previous life. This is a mandatory survey, your Guardian will be with you shortly” Just great. Not even in death can I escape the survey people.
“Welcome, John. I’m your Guardian, I’m just going to ask you a few questions about your life on…” I could feel papers flipping? “…oh… Earth… I’m so sorry to hear that. Ok, Question 1: on a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate the overall quality of your life and only your life what affected you personally?”
“Uhm… probably a 7.5? I had a nice work life balance…”
“Yeah yeah.” The voice interrupted. “Ok. Now second question: What would have improved your quality of life in your previous life, if any?”
I thought about it and I had always wanted magic, it was a shame that living on Earth lacked magic. “Having a sword and sorcery theme as well as the technology.” I answered.
“Interesting…” The voice spoke, it took a minute for the next question. “Would you like to be reborn in a ‘sword and sorcery’ style world? Or just go to your preferred afterlife? Note that you wouldn’t retain your past life experiences.”
I didn’t even think about that. “YES!” I blurted out to the voice.
“Are you sure?” The voice asked. “You won’t retain your memories, you’ll be a blank slate.”
“Positive.” I state.
“Alright, we’re preparing a world for you.” The voice said and then I felt a probe of some kind looking into what would be my memories of a fantasy world for my enjoyment. It lingered on the anime and manga I’ve watched and read, seeing what I enjoyed, what I didn’t and the like.
“The world has been made for you. Mid-level fantasy tech, a form of internet technology, a form of instant communications, high-level magic, high-level smithing, fantasy metals and flora and fauna. Anything you wish to add or make sure they are there?” The voice asked after listing off some of the info for the world.
“How about multiple guilds, like merchant, adventurer, etc.”
“Sounds like a good addition, we already had the standard Adventurers Guild” The voice admired. “Now that the world is done, good luck on your new life.” And with that I was plunged into darkness. What the voice didn’t know was that my memory didn’t get wiped and stayed intact.
