Thoughts on using NotebookAI

Posted at

So I've used NotebookAI on a story that I've had somewhat on the back burner for a while as it had stalled for various reasons. I had an idea that I wanted to write but I was losing track of the various characters so I actually needed the AI to create a master list of characters mentioned in the story, whether they were alive, dead or some sort of spiritual being... Etc
What I will definitely trust the AI for in the future: Keeping names lists
Light research (naming conventions)
What is iffy: The AI's analysis of character voices. It put words in the mouths of people who are mentioned but so far have remained off stage.
To be discounted entirely:
So called clean copy. I found what the AI created from my uploaded files to barely resemble the inputted files that were its basis.
What I apparently can't do at all:
Invite others to see what the AI is doing and the results. Which takes humans out of the loop.
Conclusions:
A decent research tool, but not terribly trustworthy to carry forth your vision.
I will definitely be looking for an editor for a Swords and Sorcery type of story when I feel I have an acceptable conclusion to what I'm writing. I don't have a firm completion day or exact end point in mind so that is somewhat nebulous, though just working with the AI has somewhat helped me improve the impact of my writing in my opinion.
Just like with a human editor or proofreader, eventually the author must make their own choices or the story is no longer theirs.
